Mine has a reversible faceplate. I've never reversed it in the 6 months I've had it. It's never been stolen, either.

well, there ius always a chance of getting your cd player stolen, even if it does have a detachable face.

the detachable face, however is just an added security so it doesnt stick out AS MUCH as it would with a big shiny face on

IMO

Yep. They don't claim it's not possible to have it stolen if you have the detachable faceplate...just that it's less likely

Sure they are.

Why would someone steal it if they can steal the one next to yours that does have the faceplate?

A used stereo is worth a quick what, $50 on the street? A new faceplate is at least $20, so really it's worthless.

Plus, without the faceplate it's much more difficult to tell the model of the deck...

in my experiences, a new faceplate is usually about $85-$125.... if you take it off, don't loose it!

It's effective.

I used to take off my faceplate all the time for about 3 or 4 months..then I got lazy and just left it on, after about 8 months later, someone broke into my car and jacked my stereo (aiwa cdc-mp3)

From now on I am removing the faceplate. If they REALLY wanted it they could still steal it, but how can they really want it if they can't tell what model it is? Plus like the other said, if they look in one car window and see the faceplate gone, and look in the next car and see a faceplate there, and they are both equally easy to break into, they are gonna go for the easy pick.

Definitely. If you were a theif in the night, and you were going to hit a parking lot, would you hit notfred's car, for example, :) or your own car that doesn't have the face anywhere in sight. While they know there's a 50/50 chance that the face is sitting in the glove compartment, more often than not, they don't want to take the time to chance it and they'll hit a sure thing.

I have a detachable CD player in my car. A few months back, my car got brocken into and they stole all my CD and stuff. I had about 40 CDs in there and they took all of them. I had detached the faceplate of the player but because I was too lazy too carry it, I just left it under the seat. Luckily the didn't find the faceplate and so they didn't take the dash player

Do you guys realize how easy it is to break into a car? Especially if you're not stealing it, but just breaking into it. I helped a friend break into her own car because she left the keys on her seat, and we were both very surprised at how easy it was. A pro could have done it in a tenth of the time.
This means that if a pro is stealing CD players, he can probably take the time to check your car (and glove compartment box) AND the car next to yours.

That said, if it's just a jerk looking for a quick $50 to buy some drugs with, he'll probably hit the easiest target.

I have had two faceplate stereos in my car...
My first Pioneer deck was in my car for 4 years...I got lazy after a few years and one night had my car broken into...they broke the faceplate while trying to extract the whole deck not realizing it was detachable, and abandoned their attempt...

My second deck hasn't had the faceplate taken off in months.

detachable faces are a deterrent, plus I would never leave my original cds in the car. If my cd collection gets stolen, I can easily replace it with about $5 worth of blank cds.

I left my faceplate on when my car got broken into. They took my CDs (mostly CD-Rs).....and they tried prying the CDplayer from the dashboard but I have a Toyota Camry('96)...and the CD player is secured by 4 bolts inside the dash....so they just broke the part that joins the faceplate. I thought it was broken and I was about to have a new CDplayer installed at BestBuy...but the guy said he can put my old one back on for like $10. Thank God I own a Toyota.~

it sure helps a lot, but not fool proof

taking the faceplate off becomes a pain in the ass when done routinelly, espcially if im going to the grocery store for like only 15mins. If my car is parked in a ghetto area, i take my face plate off, otherwise i just flip it over(i dont think this works, thieves arent that dumb, you can easily tell the diff. between a flipped over stereo and just a blank compartment, but im just doing it for the sake of false sense of security)

im thinking of getting some reflective tinted window, but doubt that will work well, since you can look through it when you stick your eyes right on the glass.

I definitely know how to break in to the car without damaging it. I've done it to practically every car I've owned.

I?m not saying it?s not going to happen. Not everyone?s a pro though. There?s a lot of kiddies out there with nothing better to do. Every time I?ve been hit for something in my car, they've just broken a window. Makes a loud noise, but it?s the fastest way by far.

The idea is to make your car less attractive than the next one. Lots of people never remove the face. They?ll go for the ?sure thing? first if two cars are side by side, since they usually won?t want to stick around, checking glove compartments.

I'd recommend against this. A glove box could be easily forced open, and then HOORAY! Gotta pay for a new stereo and a new glove box/dash. I say take it with you always, and leave the glove box so they can check.

It's kinda like the advice of always carrying at least $20 in cash with you, so you have something to give someone if they robs you. Crazy people are more likely to shoot you if you only give them 3 bucks, than if you give them the 20 or 30 they need to get their fix.

My face is detachable. It comes in pretty handy when I want to rob a bank, and not be identified.

Oh, wait...

when i first got my detachable face cd player i used to take it off and take it with me, now it goes in the center console. gets annoying, and the cd player isn't THAT nice, if it gets stolen it's just an excuse for me to get a new one, lol
