Most of the victims reportedly died from suffocation or head injuries.
Al-Ahly football players were trapped in the changing room along with supporters. [...]
"This is not football. This is a war and people are dying in front of us. There is no movement and no security and no ambulances," [midfielder] Abo Treika told the Ahly television channel. "This is a horrible situation and today can never be forgotten." [...]
The two teams have a long history of bad blood, and clashes have erupted in recent years between their fans. [...]
Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh, reporting from Cairo, said several football games after the revolution have witnessed violence due to the absence of police forces.

those Al Masry fans need to be tali - banned

I can't believe this is true. I am in utter shock. The fans chased the opponents into a corner and killed them. This is disgusting.

Saw that too. I liked one of the ESPN comments, went something like 'The USA doesn't even need to continue war in the middle east, just hold a soccer tournament and let them kill each other"

..."but there are growing theories that it was politically motivated and that the lack of police efforts to stop it may have been intentional. Football and politics are very closely linked in Egypt and the militant fans (known as "ultras") of Al Ahly "played an in important role in the protests that early [last] year toppled President Hosni Mubarak"

Wow. This is a crazy situation. Even if it was politically driven... it doesn't make it any less astounding. I don't see how this isn't on the front page of CNN News right now. Instead they have the Facebook IPO info. Important... sure. As important as an entire fairly major country killing 70 people and injuring more than 1000 others.... not at all.

In a match in 1966 match between Millwall and Brentford at the Old Den, someone from the stands decided to throw a grenade at Brentford keeper Chic Brodie, which landed in the goal. After the grenade getting thrown, Brodie signaled to a linesman to come over, and after the linesman came over, he signaled for everyone to leave the field as quickly as possible.

To me, this entire story is extremely bizarre, as even though it happened over 45 years ago, how does somebody get a grenade into a stadium and be able to throw it. At least no one was hurt.

In a Serie A match in 2001 between Inter Milan and Atalanta, Inter fans stole a scooter from an Atalanta fan before the match and snuck it into the stadium. Afterwards, the fans took the scooter into the upper deck of the San Siro and after failing to light it on fire, the fans then threw the scooter into an empty section of the lower deck with the intention of the scooter reaching the pitch.

To me, this is one of the most bizarre events that has ever happened in a football match, and it is incredibly ironic to me that the Inter fans actually stole an Atalanta fans' scooter and did this to it.
