Alright, well if it isn't popular enough in the US for you then I'm fine with it being the most popular sport in the world.

Its never the sport itself that causes the violence, it is the fans that watch it. Soccer has the most diehard, and fanatical fans of any sport in the world. Whether they are violent because of the outcome of a match or because of something else, it is the fans themselves.
