I've never owned an American nameplate car (can't really call dodge an american car company at this point). But this one makes me at least think about it. It looks amazing in white and it's even faster than the older platform challenger.

Given they cost about the same if I was spending $65k or so on a car I really think I'd go for this over an m3. Probably not going to handle as well but that engine would definitely be a "kids back when we had gas cars.... I had this thing called a hellcat" story. Bet it sounds amazing too
 
I love my Charger but this makes me realize I need both a DD and special occasion car. I'd like to take this out and just hunt for lambos to beat them. Screw speeding tickets. And I take back my comment about the spoiler delete. They did it right with this model.

It can turn, too. It should be compared to an M5 or M6 (or is it 7 now? who da funk knows) instead of an M3. It's larger. I still don't understand why people complain that a 2-ton tank of a family sedan can't turn like a Miata. You can't haul five adults and five suitcases in a Miata either and nobody seems to complain about that. This car is what it is - devastatingly fast, menacing and freaking awesome. And yes, it can turn. If you want a race car, get a Viper.

Eh, nameplate doesn't mean much, and its still about as American as most American car brands.

I'm pretty sure they're on the same platform? The Charger might be on the newer revision of it but its not like they've overhauled it so that its radically different (wait a few years though, I believe the next one is going to be on a platform shared with Maserati). Its faster because its more aerodynamic. Acceleration wise they're pretty similar, the Charger being a bit slower since its heavier.

I definitely would take it over an M3. Bigger dilemma for me would be how much more is the Z06 Stingray going to cost, and do I really need more than 2 seats. :awe:

I doubt this thing handles as well as an M5. The Challenger Hellcat "drives" noted that while it is better, it still doesn't handle well and is far from a driver's car. The Charger is even heavier and I don't think its supposed to be a handler even compared to the Challenger so I doubt it'll be better (although maybe they've spent the extra time also tuning the handling more as well).

Not that I think you should criticize the Dodge too much since obviously very different goals. But even for a big cruiser the Challenger is considered pretty bad. Hopefully Maserati/Alfa Romeo/Ferrari can help improve that.

They only made around 1,850 of them, one for every two Dodge dealership in the US to qualify it for NASCAR. Most of the one's shipped to dealers didn't sell very well so some took off the wing and nosecone and sold them as regular 1970 roadrunners as late as 1972. This was also about the time insurance companies began hammering muscle-cars with extravagant rates, in response many cars sold in 1968-1971 were listed with HP #'s that were well under what these engines were capable of producing. Also factoring in was that tire technology (and brakes as well) lagged well behind engine development which could make a '60's era muscle-car dangerous in the wrong hands.

My dad said he saw a few of those for sale at naval bases back in the 70's. Guys would try to sell their cars before shipping out and no one wanted them for some reason. He remembers one in great shape for $1500. Crazy how collectible and expensive they are now.
 
around 10, 15 years ago, when I still lived in the Ft. Worth area I'd see one driving on 820 once in a while, pretty hard to miss with that wing. I think I was a blue one if I remember right.
 
I remember spotting one sitting on the side of the road infront of a broken down house near Dayton, Oregon around 2001. I have no idea if it was an original. Looked in good shape though. Was orange/red.

Yea, the wing was something you either loved or hated, there was no middle ground. Also the regular Roadrunner was cheaper and faster than the Superbird in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile as it was a lighter car sans the adornments, the wing did help traction to the rear over 60-70 MPH though and eventually NASCAR started making "winged" cars carry extra weight as an offset which then made it not worthwhile to race one.

Sure they are. ~600ish HP isn't other worldish. The V10 and it's lack of noise and low end grunt is starting to be very noticeable. It does a lot of things well, but honestly isn't better at any one thing then the C7.

It's not selling because outside styling it isn't a very interesting car at the moment. Get it above 800 where it because a wild stallion again that only the bravest can tame, and people will flock to it. Well as much as a 100k American semi exotic could have people flock to it.

A powered front axle would help, but you’ll want more rubber out back, too. The Hellcat’s 275/40R-20s are all too easy to reduce to the rubber pellets now thickly coating the wheelwells of our test car. It takes feet as light as a ballerina’s to get the Hellcat to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds—0.1 behind the GT500—and through the quarter-mile in 11.7 at 126 mph—0.1-second ahead and 1-mph faster than the GT500. Dodge quotes an 11.2-second quarter-mile on the tacky surface of an NHRA-certified drag strip, but the Pirellis feel so overstressed that hitting that low ET would also require dropping tire pressures to about 10 psi. (We always conduct our acceleration tests at the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressures.) At higher speeds, though, the Hellcat runs away from everything in its price range. It hits 150 mph in 17 seconds flat, 0.8-second ahead of the Viper and the same time as we recorded from the quickest C6 Corvette Z06 we ever tested. Indeed, it out-accelerates just about every front-engine, rear-drive car we’ve ever hooked our test gear to. Improving on this car’s acceleration would require moving the engine behind the driver—and preferably sending power to the front wheels, too.

As for the other aspects of the 707-hp Dodge Challenger’s performance, the three-mode Bilstein shocks do a commendable job of taming body roll even in their least aggressive setting. Punch them up to Track mode, however, and bumps appear below you that you never knew existed before. Handling is very flat, and the steering quick and responsive but pinky light. With such a quick rack, it feels a little artificial. But this is a 4488-pound car that does an excellent job of handling its weight. The Challenger may not dive much under heavy braking, but passengers will, as the SRT hauls down from 70 mph in just 154 feet.

So it’s not a one-trick ’cat. But it’s so good at its best trick that it’s easy to overlook the others. It’s easy and fun. Really fun.

An anonymous Chrysler source has given us some very interesting information: they've dyno'd a Hellcat at all the way up to an insane 825 HP, though they're having trouble meeting emissions requirements at the advertised 707 HP.

Ok. It is a supercharged engine.... A pulley swap and a different tune for an increase of 17% is not anything impressive. Every supercharged engine on the market is trivial to up the boost pressure and make gobs more power. There is just a trade off with drivability, mileage, and most importantly, engine life and reliability.
