The kid beating up another kid needs a back story. The kid stealing money needs a backstory.

But...

The kid mutilating (more than one) animal and not seeing that theres anything wrong with it seems like enough to tell theres something fundamentally wrong. The blame may lay with the parents, but it needs to be adressed.

I don't see anything inherently wrong with killing animals (torture yes, killing no) so unless someone can show me that this kid has a history of this kind of stuff I don't see this as any different than smashing a class project. Definitely inappropriate behavior, but the killing isn't the issue.

You're splitting hairs. Whether or not he torturted the ducks, it's the lack of empathy and feeling that he'd done nothing wrong that should be sending up the red flags here. Animal cruelty in children is a classic precursor to the onset of psychopathy/antisocial disorder later in life. It doesn't necessarily mean he's going to turn into a serial killer, but if I were his father he'd be in therapy the next day.
