What names should we use for the race this year?

  • Snowmen vs. Yetis

  • Ying vs Yang

I vote for keeping the F@H stats running during the short PG race. I was going to move my cpu and gpu cycles to the PG race until I saw how long it would take the cpu units to run. So, gpu for the PG race and cpu staying with folding.

It looks like I may have come in under the wire (uploaded @ 9.45 PM EST), but I'm sure there are those who won't and may thus go unrewarded for several days of folding.

I don't think the PG race is unfair, I just think that those who choose to stop folding do so of their own free will. (And personally I can't fathom the fascination with prime numbers! 🙂 )

Maybe we should move the F@H race to January so there are no distractions.

Looks like I had a bigadv drop this morning so the one bigadv that I got so far this race won't count!

When you have F@H WU's that take days to complete, having a break in the race midway is a bummer. I am not going to switch my -bigadv guys to SMP to time the break better or whatever. Presumably I am doing what is best for F@H based on the points awarded.

I understand how this years race was laid out, but prefer to have the F@H run uninterrupted in the future.

I just got the first bigadv in months, but its on my 2600k, whick never finishes one of those successfully. Stupid error "can't allocate memory for arcfile"

Yeah, maybe move it back to starting around Thanksgiving and ending at the start of the PrimeGrid race next year.

Just a short messege: I am away from home ... do not have the spreadsheet or the computer - posting this from my smartphone.
I'll do stats tomorrow. I have some ideas how to get this solved. Please have patience.

Peter, as the guiding light of this race, I certainly value your efforts and your thoughts. And it is with utmost respect that I offer my 2 cents worth:

There really isn’t anything to solve here. If someone wants to move over to another race, for however long a period, that’s their call.
I moved some hardware over just to do this race and I will move it back when I’m done. Everyone else is free to do the same.

Lord knows we all have our preferences, and are entitled to them. And others are certainly entitled to have a winter race. But each person has to make a choice as to how much of their resources they want to devote and for how long, without apology.

One further thought; …………… I may stand corrected here, but I think the FAH race has seniority, and tradition on its side, and should not be moved.

So there you go, maybe a little more than 2 cents worth. 🙂

But since it is free, it is priceless..................

I believe you're correct. On the other hand, the PrimeGrid race is an inter-team race, while the FAH race is not. Besides affecting the relative importance of stats earned in each race, this means we can control when the FAH race is, but we can't control the PrimeGrid race.

Petrus,

If it wouldn't be too much extra work:

Please consider allowing the Folding At Home race points to count during the Prime race period.

And then after the Prime race do any final adjusting to the Holiday Race TeAms to keep them close.

Thanks

Gary

PS: Have a very Merry Christmas!
Hi Gary,
I am considering it ... but am away from home, so I don't have my spreadsheet with me ... I'll do the stats tomorrow, and we will see how things work out.
A possible solution: splitting the race in three periods (like Ice hokey):
Period 1: before the PG race
Period 2: during the PG race
Period 3: after the PG-race
Having it that way we can either declare three winners or we can add the results ...
OTOH: the time table was posted at the start of the race - IMHO very clearly.
Could it be that so many of the racers did not read the first post properly?
Well, an other option is to run the race between the PG races next year ... I think that will be the best.
Any opinions?
Thanks for your input, I'll be back tomorrow and we can then try to get it all working.
If you want, you could post this in the forum ... I find it harder to do that from my smartphone ... easy to read posts, harder to write them ...
Best regards,
Peter
Yes, now that I go back and read the time table, it is clear!
But honestly I did not understand it that way when I first read it. I suppose I was letting the way we did it the previous years influence what I was thinking.
Whatever you decide is great with me 🙂

I am not going to pout this close to Christmas or during the race as it is against the rules!

Yep..............

I think all this started when it seemed like special accommodations should be made because of the PG race. And my vote (if I had one) would be to just let the FAH race run. If people come and go that is their choice. (there is that word again) It doesn’t bother me if someone moves resources over to another race and then back again.

I intend to shut up now and let my folders fold while I go shopping for the grandkids............ ^_^

Getting ready to end the PG race a little early. Want to see what kind of F@H numbers I can get for the month.

Happy birthday to me, so I made another small hardware upgrade for the last push of the race.

*snip*

Somehow I managed to quote you before you edited down that really long post 😛

*end snip*

Also have 12 cores on a server folding for a week. Really disappointed in the performance there. No bigadv units (passkey and flagged as necessary). The server is exactly what F@H is looking for on the bigadv units. Lots of cores and lots of ram.

Awesome! Happy Birthday! 🙂

Do you have that server set to accept "big" downloads? I think that is part of the formula... I am sure others here know better than me though...

OK, TaEm-mates, I am back.
I have to confess that I am so tired (because of the past two days work) that my spelling errors required me to type this in my word processor and then to paste it - all due to the 14 spelling mistakes in the first 10 words ...

The stats look very good.
The PrimeGrid Race did not make much of a difference:

  • the difference before the PG-race was 39K = 0.18%
  • the difference after the PG-race was 183K = 0.68%
  • daily production approx. 900K/team
Thus the difference is approximately less than 5 hours of folding.
The results stand as they do now. I hope that everybody is somewhat more happy now …
This means that the teams are quite well balanced and that the race now goes on to the end.
Please remember: recruiting, assimilating, borghing, upgrading is still allowed. The only thing which matters is production. :ninja:

I did have it set up to accept big downloads. Oh well, we shall see what happens.
Oh, and Ubuntu is horrible for keeping gpu temps down. The inability to adjust fan controls is frustrating.
I do have a win7 family upgrade pack (only used 1 of the 3), however none of my ubuntu machines has ever had windows on them. I would like to get win7 on the gtx460 machine just so that I can control the damn fan speed to keep it cool (and to overclock since it is running at 700mhz and the same card in windows runs just fine at 830mhz).

Looks like your spell checker needs to be fired.

Noooooo ... I can't live without my spell checker, ...
No, that word I OK'ed myself ... just a proof of my state of mind then ...
What surprises me is that I can not find (yet) any errors in the stats ...
Hey, don't look for them, just let it be!

Oh, BTW: All CPU-cores and all GPUs back to folding again ... :ninja:

Thanks for the stats!

When you guys are using GPU and SMP on the same rig, do you leave one CPU per GPU out, or just one CPU, or no CPUs at all? With nvidia, of course, as AMD seems to need a whole CPU for a GPU...
