6800 ultra not feeling satisfied with performance vs 9700 pro

just upgraded from 9700 pro which i usually oc to 9800 pro speeds...

in CS:S... stress test pulls about 40 extra fps regardless if i have no AA and ansio off or 4x AA and 16x ansio... really no difference in 1024x768

in the game with 9700 pro i got between 45-90 fps no aa/2x ansio... and about the same 45-90 with some exceptions where it spiked at 120 fps... with and without the aa/ansio.

3dmark05... the ati had about 2200 maybe? 6800u 4875 marks (seems low) or something like that with that 1 fps cpu bench and like 3-30 fps in other benches... while the graphics do not look extra stunning or anything compared to 3dmark03 though both dx9..

im just not feeling the extra boost in game performance though the numbers say it and i used to notice a big difference between fps regardless if its 40 fps, 80 fps, 120 fps etc with other cards from the bump between the original geforce 256 ddr to radeon 8500 le to ti4800se to 9700 pro, but not the 6800u.

lol maybe i should play older dx 8.1 games to feel like this is worth the upgrade?

sounds like a CPU bottleneck... what is your processor?

edit: and yeh, buying the top end gpu and running at 1024x768 resolution is just silly! Turn them both to 1600x1200 then make a comparison 😉

well try playing over 10x7 and you'll see where the 6800ultra really shines,

CS:S is cpu limited, and will be even more so if u play at 10x7, 4875 maybe round abouts right, the 71.xx drivers from nvidia are the ones to have if u want a good 3d mock score.

try higher settings, im sure the 9700 would die at 12x10 with 4xaa and 8xaf on HL2, but the 6800U will handle it with aplomb

at the res and AA and AF levels your playing at now, you wont see any improvement....as your gonna be CPU limited in a lot of games, just crank that eye candy all the way up, crank every game detail settin all the way up, and crank the res up and then you'll see the difference

where to get the latest driver or beta? nvidia site has only 66 as latest official

also pple with just the 6800gt get the same score as me... i didnt think the non a64 core and ondie mem controller made such a huge difference

well, every CPU will be limited at that res.. as to your 3dmark score, it does seem rather low... the on die mem controller does make a big difference, but still this should not really affect the 3dmark 05 benchmark, which is a mainly graphics card pusher... but hey... what IS your cpu? andddd http://www.3dchipset.com/index.php#157 <-- drivers.

People who judge cards by the benchmarks annoy me...

ANYHoo, It is probably a cpu bottleneck, I would get a new mobo, and a A64 3200+, or 3500+

I think your CPU, and *possibly* your slightly odd RAM setup is the culprit here - turn up the resolution as suggested and you will definitely see a difference.

Stressing the card, by playing at a higher res will show the 6800U is a far better card.

And as others have said, your card is crying for a faster CPU.

i went from a laptop with an ati 9600 128mb mobile card to a evga 6800 ultra gpu and WOAH does it run stuff like butter. I did spend $600 on the darn pci-e version though lol.

EQ2 looks like pure sweetness.

yea.... it was dual channel 512 generic pc3700 ram at ddr400 mhz 6-3-3 cl 2.0 but then i had to add more memory to run server applications through remote desktop connection like ms 2003 server, biztalk, optimal j, compuware, websphere, & visual studio .net for a class of mine.... the board only has 3 dimm slots so the only thing i could do temporarily was swipe out a 256 pc3200 cl 3.0 samsung stick from home and had to lower the system cl to 2.5 until i had enough dough to buy a real gig of ram.

im gonna try games without that extra stick. i found it odd that with 3 sticks, the post screen still says dual channel mode. also the refresh rate will go down to 75 or 60 if i run it at like 1280 since its an older 17 inch IBM trinitron.

btw, i bought that mobo and 9700 pro in august 04 cuz my older nforce2 couldnt OC the barton well... so i don't feel like major upgrade so quickly, just that i got this card at an incredible deal a couple weeks ago... ill wait until dual core a64s are out and see what amd's direction will be later with the memory platform... continue ddr a year longer, go ddr2, ddr3, etc.... I want long platform like AXP and ddr400 🙂

Exactly why I am having a hard time dumping my 9700pro. I am sure that with a 2.4c at 3.0 that everything is cpu limited. So I need a whole new system and am cheap.

I went from a ATI 9800 Pro to the BFG 6800 Ultra last week and couldn't be happier. One of the first things I did was try out all the games that stuttered before. Now I can play Farcry and Halo with no problems. I can go 16x12 on HL2. I can even play again 9 insane level computer opponents at the same time in Warcraft III. Before the game would serious slow down and stutter with that many opponents, but no longer even at the highest settings. Ironically this makes the game much, much harder as I don't have as much time to think and react which is what you need when its just you vs. 9 insane level computer opponents.

noob here:

I'm having low FPS as well with a 6800 GT in CS:S. I have a Monitor from, no joke, 1997 that is 17". It cannot go over 1168x8whatever it is.

I'm a little confused but it sounds like if I had a newer monitor, cranked my res up to 1600x1200, turned ALL the stuff way up (aniso and anti aliasing) I would get better FPS rates than I am now? On some levels I'm getting 40 FPS and lower. I talked to one guy with an x800 and he was getting 150+ FPS on the same level.

Thanks for your help I'm really confused. Maybe it's time to buy a newer monitor?

Rig:
Athlon 64 3200+ (Newcastle core)
eVga 6800GT (not ocd)
1gig ram (kingston value)
DFI Lanparty UT nf3 250GB mobo

2xIDE HD and 2xSATA HD
2xCD/rom/dvd/burner

Play with every setting as maxed as possible . . . that said, you should not see a "difference" (except re: SM 3.0) as both the 9700p and 6800u are both dx9 cards . . . . it's certainly not drastic like e.g. a r8500 to a 9800p.

What you get is more "horsepower" . . . . faster (much faster) and the ability to add massive amounts of AA+AF at higher resolutions . . . . if you only play at 10x7, the ultra is a waste. 😛

Probablyyou should consider upgrading your cpu and certainly monitor to something that supports 16x12 at decent refresh rate (lcd or crt) if you really want to take full advantage of your card.
