6800 Overheating badly...

Ok, so, I'd had another topic on my GPU problem, but this has manifested into something so much worse. Ok, starting today, my GPU is running hot... real hot. It will open at around 50-60 degrees... standard... and then begin to steadily climb into the 90s and even 100s. But nothing's happening! I can simply open nView and look at the temperature guage and watch it rise. I have no clue what's going on.

Card: eVGA e-GeForce 6800 Ultra
Speeds: (Using PowerStrip) 3D and 2D settings are both 400/1100
BIOS Changes:
Disabled AGP Fast Write
AGP 8X
Aperature Size: 128 (taken down from 256 as nVidia recommended, even though 256 is quite shy of half of my total RAM [2GB])
PCI Latency: 128
IRQ to VGA enabled

That's all I can remember at this second... system specs if you need them:

CPU: AMD Athalon 64 FX-55
MOBO: ASUS A8V Deluxe
GPU: eVGA e-GeForce 6800 Ultra
RAM: 2GB Corsair
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro
HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB

Please help...

Is this under load? CAREFULLY feel your heatsink. Does it feel extremely hot to the touch?

Are you still running the stock HS? If so, check to see if there's enough thermal paste on it by taking the HS off. Another thing, how's your airflow within your case? Do you have your fans pointing the right way? If you have a window fan, make sure you have it sucking air out

(BTW, I have a 560W Thermaltake PurePower PSU...)

I'm not sure. In the nView thing, it has basically 2 things: Ambient (outside?) temperature (which is at around 40-50 degrees thanks to 5 fans) and then the GPU temp (which does the rising).

And I can leave it sitting at the desktop and it will rise... and I'm sure that this isn't a very GPU demanding process... idling.

I didn't touch the heatsink directly, but after noting the fan was still on, I reached in to feel the air and felt hot air coming from the GPU.

To be honest, I'm not sure what HS is... heh... but I can tell you that this case is only 2 1/2 weeks old so I'd hope nothing that came with it has melted or been damaged already...

I have no window on the case, but all 5 case fans (3 fans, 2 exhausts) are working. Two fans on the side panel on one on the front do the fanning, a fan on the back and on the top do the exhausting. There are also 2 fans on the PSU, one on the GPU, and one on the CPU.

Do you have the Nvidia system utility?

NM..you don't have an Nforce board...i'm not sure you can use the utility.

Also looks like your ambient temperature is quite warmer than what i'm at. Sitting at 37c ambient 48c GPU.

Dont crack the heatsink to check for thermal inconsistancies , less the warranty is voided . Just keep useing it or send it back if your concerned... 60 degrees idle is common for stock 6800U.

Or even worse! Does it feel cool to the touch. If so your Heat Sink is probably not seated on the GPU core evenly. I would take the card out and examine it. See if the Heat Sink is loose or uneven. Note any broken screws that hold the heat sink on.

Ok, new development. When the computer starts up, everything starts normally. However, once Windows is situated and ready to go, the fan on the GPU stops. It spins when the computer is loading, but once Windows is up it stops. That makes a lot of sense, actually, but what's making it do that? I thought maybe eVGA drivers, but the only drivers they give you are nVidia graphics drivers... none for the eVGA card itself.

I remember there being a setting in the 6800 GPU's about the fan not running all the time. I'm not sure where I saw it though. From what I saw is the fan's only run when the video card is highly in use. anyone?

the previous driver i had for the 5900 had it on the clock frequency tab after coolbits edit, don't know if that helps, its not on my latest driver, i think 66.93.
it used to say "fan always on" where you could tick it

That fan should never stop!

Ok, I got Coolbits and NVTweak to work and in the OC settings under nVidia Display, there was the option for "Fan Always On."

Guess what? It's not. I rebooted (and have it set to always do this upon reboot) and the fan is not spinning. It spins at turn on, but then stops at Windows.

I don't know what to do now.

i had a similar problem with my leadtek 6800gt, when i went into standby mode the fan cut out....and the ambient temps measured with temp probes on my Antec P160 gradually rose....so i couldnt use standby, and now i still cant use standby coz i get BSOD when i press the standby button

Well, not sure if this will fix the problem or not, but I sent the card back to New Egg for the full $509 refund and am putting that same moeny (plus more for the full year and not 30 day warranty) into BFG-Tech nVidia GeForce Ultra 6800 256MB... essentially the same card but its listed core speed is 425MHz as opposed to 400MHz... I guess I could've looked into an eVGA e-GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB Extreme Edition (250MHz), but I figured to the same price (and the good reveiws it's gotten) I might as well try the BFG card.

It'll be here on Thursday... hope it works.

This is a silly question I'm sure...

Did you plug in the extra power connector(s) for your video card?

I believe you HAVE to do that in order for the system to boot. When I was building my pc, I tried starting the computer without it plugged in, all it did was scream like a stuck pig, no screen or anything.
