$600 decision - help me pick my new digital camera!

hey guys...I have a delema here. I am about to drop roughly $600 on a digital camera and I am absolutely stuck between the two.

The first one: FujiFilm - FinePix 4900
Average Price: $550 ebay New

Features:
  • 6x Optical Zoom
  • 3.7x Digital Zoom
  • 22.5x TOTAL Zoom
  • 2.4 MegaPixel Images
  • 2400x1800 Max Res For Stills
  • Up to 160 Seconds Video Recording (320x240)

The second cam: Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom
Average Price: $500 ebay New

  • 10x Optical Zoom
  • 2.7x Digital Zoom
  • 27x TOTAL Zoom
  • 2.1 MegaPixel Images
  • 1600x1200 Max Res For Stills
  • Up to 35 seconds video recording (320x240, but im sure upping the memory allows larger files)

What do you guys think? Anyone here a hardcore photographer?
Since theyre equal in price, Im really torn. The fujifilm model is a
SEXAY design, but no as much zoom, although does seem to out-
perform the C-2100 in almost every other way - crapzor. Should
The c-2100 does have image stabilization too, so if I go with the
fuji, Im getting 22.5x Zoom instead of 27.0x Zoom, and also losing
the stabilization (not sure how much of a diff it will make.) But I
really do like the looks of the fuji and i LOVE the sound of 2400X1800
resolution 🙂 Anyone own either of the two?

Reply Please!

you could go el cheapo and get the fuji finepix 2800 now for $300. but i'd get the fuji. the 2.4 mp sensor is better because it uses fuji's special ortogonal sensors instead of normal squares to give a image about as good as a 3 mp. plus

Thanks very much Hans, I appreciate the input. Every little bit helps.
I dont know why its such a problem for me, the FinePix looks pretty
much like the clear winner to me. U guys think so?

for 600 you can get a camera well over the 2+ megapixel category, probably 3.3 or 4. but if 2 megapixels is all you require, the dimageX Minolta comes out in two weeks, and will be the only digital camera around smaller than the elph s110 with a 3x optical zoom. Other cameras to consider include canon powershot s40 (pocket size, 4 megapixels, 3x optical), Sony CyberShot DSC-S85 4.1MP (2272X1704) 16MB, the Minolta Dimage 7, or my personal favorite, the Sony CyberShot DSC-P5 3.34MP 1280X 960 8MB USB. Generally, anything fy fujifilm is good stuff 🙂

thx for the suggestions, ed, but Im really lookin for
something with halfway decent zoom, ya know? 2x and 3x
doesnt do the thing for me. They seem weak and wussy.
I like being able to zoom in, zoom out..u know. What else guys?

MAVICA FD97 2.1MP DIGITAL CAM 10X/20X ZOOM 1600X1200 UXGA- $458, 2.1 megapixel, 10x optical~!

<< Olympus 3040 Zoom

From Steves-digicams
>>

Steve's rocks! U see that? his counter is up over 30 millions hits! good lord!

Anywyas, the 3040 is a bit too pricey right now, still around $800 avg I believe.

thx for the suggestion.

I currently have an older mavica, and Im not happy with it at all.

I would like to stay away from sony I guess 😕

Canon seems to make the best digital cameras, then fuji, thn kodak and then olympus

I like the Canon A20, it has been voted very highly by zdnet and even steves digicam said it was his top pick. Only thing that bothers me is a lot of these cameras, it says you cannot delete the picture from the camera. Seems odd.

I love my oly 2100 uzi, image stabilization is great at 10x, 6x w/o stabilization could be OK, couldn't tell ya.

I saw the 2100 at compusa for $500, that's a decent price.

I'm sure both are nice, only thing I don't like about my camera is the size. Great for going out and taking pictures, not so great if your out doing something and just want to bring the camera along.

Capn! Thanx so much - info from an owner!
So if you had a second chance, would u buy it again? I realize its large, but it aint that big of a deal.
I really wanna hear more from you, capn - if you dont mind.

Could u tell me a few of the ups/downs youve noticed?

Thanks a lot! -Bob

Color me apprehensive, but I'd be a bit gunshy about buying a big ticket item through ebay. Lurk on the hot deals forum for a bit and you'll find a good pick 😉

LOL thnx for the suggestion..I have a pathetic confession to make:

Everytime someone posts a "hot deal" I look at it and have no idea
how to follow thru with it! I mean, i have no idea how to do the
pricematches and rebates and all that stuff. They confuse the hell
out of me!

I just got the "Oly" C-4040 (4.2meg) last month for $600 it takes great pictures and you can do a lot with it. Also check out the Sony 707
and the Sony S85 great digicams.

Would I buy it again, hmn probably. Given there's some new cameras that have come out since then, so I can't be totally sure. However when I purchased the camera it was really the only camera that had the features I wanted and the price. I was initially going to purchase the olympus c370, but I think the image quality of the 2100 is better than the 370. If there's anything I'd change about the camera I'd give it higher resolution, 2.11 is nice but I really envy those 5mp cams.

I'm pretty much a newbie regarding this photography stuff. But I've taken some nice pictures with my camera and I'm happy with it.

If you want an experts opinion I can't give a better recommendation than checking out the forums at www.dpreview.com

OMG I just looked at the OLY 4040 and it takes pics up to 2816x 2112?

HOLY F-ING COW. thats like 4 of my monitors 2 on top, 2 on bottom.

Quite pricey and wimpy zoom ixnay it from my choices. Going to check

out the sony right now.

hey capn, thnx for the input. I am really leaning towards the Fuji now, I think id like the larger resolution also.

Hey, I saw in another thread that walmart does digital image printing very cheap compared to all the rest.

like $.26 for a 4x6 and $2.29 for a 8x10! that aint bad at all!

Anyone Own the fuji finepix 4900???!?!?!

mm optical zoom...

while you're at dpreview, drool over the new cameras that are coming out this year...

droooooooool...

my next camera will cost over $2000 cuz i said so. DSLR...

i have a sony 505v =) mmm optical zoom...

the question is, what are you gonna do with the camera? I always ask that question.

mday..I just love to take pics. I take pics of anything that seems cool to me.

I know I dont need monsterous top of the line equipment, but I wanna have
big, beautiful clear images. I admire the guys who post their pics they've taken
(maybe this was only on hard forums, I dunno if u guys do this), but they would
post gorgeous pics of flowers where u could see the minute little viens and grains
on them. Absolutely astonishing. Im actually gonna carry it around in my truck with
me, except in summer cuz the truck gets up to over 150deg, I live in phx, AZ.

$2k is a kick in the balls!

If you search around HotDeals forums a little, you should be able to fine the Nikon Coolpix 995 camera for around $300-400. Of course you'll need an American Express Blue card though...

But it's a 3.34M pixel camera..

Goober, I'm kinda with the Capn here. I'm in the market for a new digital camera now and I'm really looking at the 2100. That 10x optical zoom is to die for. I usually print my photos out at 4x6 and I have a Toshiba 2.3 Mpixel camera now and that resolution makes for great 4x6 prints. I haven't tried printing anything higher so I can't say what they would look like in a 5x9 or an 8x10. From what I've read though, the 10x optical zoom with the stabilazation is fantastic. I'm not sure but I don't think you can find the stabilazation on any other camera. Sure I would like to have a 3 or 4 megapixel camera but I'm not convinced that they are worth the price and the fact that you can pick the 2100 up at CompUSA for 499.99 makes it even sweeter. Just my .02 worth.

Second the Nikon Coolpix 995, if you've got a Staples around, pricematch them to this Royal Camera should get you to $450 with their 110% pricematch + tax.

3.34 megapixil (can blow up to 8X10), 4X optical zoom.

Minolta Dimage 5

7x optical
3.34 megapixel
Macro mode
16 meg card
can take microdrives
excellent low light pictures

It's the one I'm looking to buy 🙂
You can find it as low as $600.
