Am I the only one who sees straight through the movie (and record) industry's claims that their sales are down strictly due to piracy? Anyone who's taken Statistics 101 knows the difference between correlation and causation, and the MPAA/RIAA are trying to cram this idea that piracy and piracy alone is killing their trade down the throats of anyone who's willing to listen.

I wish more people would realize they're being fleeced.

<--- realizes....

What can we do? I need to order some RIAA shirts for xmas....:)

Well I realize the /. crew knows and so does most of the AT community, but when it comes down to it the fact that a national news program passes information like that off as pure and unchallenged fact makes regular people not think twice about it...

because wouldn't you know it, many media outlets are either owned, own, or have a joint venture with some branch of either record or movie companies. That kinda crap pisses me off.

MPAA guy #1: Damn pirates, our profits are down
MPAA guy #2: I know. I hate those guys.
MPAA guy #1: Oh by the way, From Justin To Kelly two is going to be released soon.
MPAA guy #2: Oh man, that's a blockbuster waiting to happen.

Newsflash MPAA, STOP RELEASING CRAP MOVIES AND TREATING YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE CRIMINALS. I don't doubt piracy cuts into their profits, but when they say that piracy is %100 percent to blame for lower sales, that's almost too much to handle.

Yeah, that report seemed pretty pointed. Put together by an ignorant reporter who admitted she never downloaded a thing in her life, interviewed a bunch of movie industry execs, and the only person she interviewed who challenged the MPAA (president of Grokster) was a total dolt.

I just saw that show... Very one-sided

The funny thing was they admitted that 50% of their sales come from DVD.
Aren't these the same rocket-scientists that tried to prevent the adoption of the VCR (which evolved into the DVD player)?

I'll be straight up honest with you. I haven't been to the movie theatres in ages. I've seen just about every movie i've ever wanted to see however. It really has nothing to do with economic reasons, the matinee price of $5 around here is easily worth 2+ hours of time. It's just I really dont' like going to the movie theatres. The distractions are too plentiful that I'd rather sit at home and watch it. Maybe I'm a rare breed, but I would easily pay a movie company $5 to stream me a good quality movie straight from the internet. Since they don't have that option... oh well. I guess in my case they are probably losing a good amount of money, but I really don't care.

The internet was so much better when no one really knew how to use it

I think that's a perfect example of MOST people. Just look at iTunes and how well it did (X millions of songs sold in the first week or something right?) All this suing and claiming that pirates are the scum of the earth is just digging the RIAA/MPAA into a bigger and bigger hole.

Anyone who's taken Statistics 101 knows the difference between correlation and causation, and the MPAA/RIAA are trying to cram this idea that piracy and piracy alone is killing their trade down the throats of anyone who's willing to listen

It is a statistical fact that 43% of all statistics are incorrect.

That doesn't mean that the decrease in the revenue of the record and movie companies is due to yours and others' piracy. They're correlated, sure, but you can't say one causes the other.
