I would like to get a ps3 sometime soon and I was curious if the only good way to get one would be ebay. They are pretty expensive there but I guess if it's worth it to play my old PS games then I would look for one.

Does the PS3 do a good job with displaying the old games graphics? Thanks for any ideas/help.
 
If you REALLY want to play the old games, I think it'd be easier and more cost effective now to get a used PS2.
 
That's very true. I just don't think I have room in my entertainment center for 2 more consoles. I might be wrong. The slim ps2 would definitely fit but not both.

This is what I would do if you really want to play PS2 games.
 
My PS2 Slim + component cables looks about as good as my 60 GB PS3 over HDMI for PS1 & PS2 games.

The main advantage of the PS3 is unlimited virtual memory cards via hard drive files, and saving some shelf space & TV/receiver inputs.

The disadvantages of the PS3 are high cost, no warranty, $150 cost for out-of-warranty repairs, runs a little hotter than current PS3s (so louder for some people).

Good catch and good point. If the OP just wants to play PS1 games, all PS3 systems can do that, in which case he should buy the newest PS3 model w/ 65nm CPU and GPU. It's only if you wanna play PS2 games that you need a PS3 w/ BC.
 
^ right, and if you're getting a new model you might think about going to SonyStyle.com and signing up for the Sony/Chase credit card to get $150 credit, then the PS3 will only cost $250.
 
I don't think it's worth it really, if something ever happens Sony will most likely replace it with a castrated console anyways, assuming those things are even still under warranty. Maybe one day they'll put the hardware back in.

That is not my experience. My 60gb PS3 _really_ improved the image quality of PS2 games. Have you ever tried an A:B comparison? That was one of the first things I did when I got my PS3. I suppose your TV might just have an amazing scaler, but that is not going to be the experience of most people.

As for replacement/repair, Sony replaces 60gb consoles with 60gb consoles.
 
I keep hearing conflicting opinions on the visual quality of the old games on the new hardware. It's too much of a dice roll for me I guess. I will probably just get the 80gb model. Is there some kind of catch with the Sony credit card? I really don't want to fall for some trick. Thanks for the replies so far.

My Samsung 1080p DLP does seem to have a good upscaler. Were you just using a 1-plug yellow composite cable for your PS2? I was using 3-plug component.

People here have been getting the $100-150 Sony CC deal for a couple of years now, no one has reported any kind of trick.

Same here. The upscaling seems very well done.
 
I guess what I meant is, if I get a sony credit card do I have to use it a certain amount or can I just cancel it or something? Does sony still sell the 60gb?
 
GameStop's selling some used 60GB PS3 for $350 or something last I checked. The only way to know if you qualify for the Sony CC is to apply for it.

If its out of warranty Sony will still fix/replace it. Although its $150 to do the fix/replace you do get back a 60GB PS3. They don't send you a different model.

My friend recently had to pay $150 to get his PS3 fixed because the Blu-ray drive died. He got a 60GB one back.

Component. I agree, if you use composite, it's really gonna look terrible. But I still think that, for the average person, the 60gb PS3 will greatly improve their image quality - and, FWIW, my Sony has a pretty excellent scaler in it, too.

They usually are pretty sturdy, I find that most of the time, the dead blu-ray drive can be fixed by blowing some compressed air into the drive. It is usually just dirty.
 
I wish there was a way to get one of the new 160gb versions and buy one of the emo chips and install it to have the best of both worlds.
