It would help, but it might not be necessary. Like Baked said, the only way you will know is to apply. It looks like they have changed the promotion though. They are still giving $150 off, but they have a Playstation card now. They are only giving $50 off on the Sony card now.

To answer your other questions, the only catch is you have to buy the PS3 at Sonyrewards.com. The problem I have with getting it from there, is that they charge for shipping. That means the 80GB will cost you $284, and the 160GB will be $389.

I found one in FS/FT actually. I'm thankful for all the replies. If I hadn't found one here in the forums, I would have applied for the Sony Style card.

If its out of warranty Sony will still fix/replace it. Although its $150 to do the fix/replace you do get back a 60GB PS3. They don't send you a different model.

My friend recently had to pay $150 to get his PS3 fixed because the Blu-ray drive died. He got a 60GB one back.

At quick glance, it appears that some broken 60GB PS3s seem to go for ~$100 on eBay. Would Sony fix one of those for $150, as well?

As far as PS2 compatibility goes, I have a rather large PS2 collection and all of them work on my older 80GB version fine (with software emulation). I know most say the 60GB is the best for backwards compatibility due to hardware emulation, but I haven't had any problems.

well i have a 60gb BC PS3, and I can tell you, about 2 months after I got it I went and bought like 4-5 ps2 games, played a few of tem for about a week max, then haven't put a PS2 game back in my PS3 since.

and tihs was back arouns Xmas time last year.

Really? Well, I have a 60gb BC PS3, and I can tell you pretty much the only stuff I ever play on it is PS1 and PS2 games.

Moral of the story: anecdotal use cases are worthless. It's up to the purchaser to decide what's important to them. I could certainly see instances where BC is not worth much to someone, and the other way around...

yea well his thread is about him asking if it's worth it, and in my opinion/case, it's not, but initially i thought it was.

but the thing is there are more PS2 titles coming out than ps3 titles. I really dont hear that many people talk about good ps3 games but I still hear people rave about newer ps2 titles.

Speaking as a die-hard PS2 JRPG fan, I think it's pretty clear that 2009 is going to be the last year to expect any serious quantity of games for the PS2. Vanillaware, NIS, Atlus, and so forth have all moved onto the current-gen consoles. The stuff that'll be coming out next year is older stuff that was in the translation pipeline - Mana Khemia 2, Ar Tonelico 2, Sakura Taisen V (supposedly), and so forth.

IMHO, the PS3 has some excellent exclusives, but is still sucking wind when it comes to JRPGs - the only thing _confirmed_ for 2009 is X-Edge.

Of course, if you don't care about JRPGs, the PS2 is basically dead right now.
