$60 Games

When I was younger I had no problem with paying $60 or more for games. I remember the initial batch of Genesis games were all $60 and Phantasy Star 2 was around $80 and Phantasy Star 4 was $99. SNES games were no better with Street Fighter 2 Turbo around $75 and Final Fantasy 3 around $70. When I was in college I regularly imported Saturn games from Japan at $60-$100 range.

It's funny now that I can easily afford $60 games, I refuse to buy them. Part of it is that I guess I rarely game anymore. So I don't mind waiting for a sale or the price drop. Maybe I'm getting old.

and the N64 is where Nintendo lost its stranglehold on the market. That price was obviously too high.

It wasnt for any of those reasons. It was because it was a cartridge, and the big N pad devs pay extra for it.

I can somewhat see PS3's price of $60, since I guess that a bluray disc costs more than a standard DVD. But the 360 has just a DVD player, not anything special.

Not nearly $10 more.

Really, how much then? A game that comes out costs the same on a PS3/360, even though the media costs more for the PS3. Either way you look at it.

About a dollar. Do you seriously think the cost of a disc has anything to do with how much the game costs? 😕

HA I was just about to say that about Phantasy Star 4..........damn those were the good ol' days

I don't even pay $49.99 for games (typical price for newly released HOT PC titles). I think the MOST I've paid for a 360 game was $40. Halo 3 will be the first $60 game I buy for my 360. :|

Speaking of high priced games, I think the Neo Geo took the cake for it's $600 system and $200 per game. Needless to say, it didn't sell very well.

Nope I haven't. Lately I have been spending 20 - 30 on DS games, or 10 - 30 on gamecube and XBOX games.

the big difference from the Nintendo years and now is gaming is much less of a novelty. There was very little alternative at the time and the graphics update from Atari to NES was simply amazing.

Today, the graphical update from PS2/XBOX to PS3/360 is not nearly as big of a jump. It is certainly an upgrade, but not nearly as much as they used to have.

Games have normally been 50 bucks since the Atari 2600 (circa late 70s). 25+years at 50 bucks has been a pretty good run. 60 bucks is not so bad unless the game sucks, like Transformers, but for a good game you have to admit we have been lucky for over 2 decades. 🙂

I understand your point, but it is a bit relative IMO e.g. God of War even with widescreen and progressive on my HDTV isn't even in the ball park of how good games like resistance and motorstorm look. Same with Gears v. Halo or other xbox games. The few times I've played on an SDTV, the difference was much less pronounced.

don't get me wrong, the difference is very good. But it doesn't have that something else.

For instance, going from Atari to NES was a huge jump IMO because of the extra colors and gameplay feel that was added. Similar things to the Genisis/SNES generation.

Then the playstation/N64 added 3d worlds.

1. thats 37.
2. you might as well buy the games for that much.

Things that make you go Mmmm... Spider Man 3 is $20 right now for the PC, yet for the PS3/360 its $40. Its the same game, just cross platformed, so why twice as much for consoles?

SM3 (360) is the Amazon Deal of the Day for $30, for what it's worth. I'm not making a point for any which way, I just wanted to post the info in case it helped you or someone since it was brought up.

Yeah, I've been saying that forever, but no one listens to me. 🙁

Every generation up to now has given us improvements (primarily graphical) that have opened up entire new genres and have made gaming an entirely different experience. I don't really see that happening this time. We get the same old, same old with prettier graphics. They're being very creative and spending more money on story writers, but I haven't seen anything on these current-gen systems that couldn't have been done on last-gen systems with lower-res graphics. To put it a different way, would Bioshock be a different game if it was on the original Xbox? No, it'd just look worse. There are no gameplay elements that would have to be removed. On the other hand, could Goldeneye 007 have existed on the SNES? No; or at least it would have been an entirely different game. That's why I don't care if the Wii has crappy graphics compared to the 360 and PS3 - it gives me an entirely new gaming experience. That's something the 360 and PS3 haven't offered yet (even with the tacked-on Sixaxis controls)

There are very, very few games that I'll pay $60 for. 99% of games can be found for under $30 a few months after release.

40 bucks... i can and do impulse buys and not regret it later. at 60 + tax? hard to swallow. i end up renting games more often (and am usually glad i didn't spend 60+ dollars on a spur of the moment thing after playing a particular game for a couple of days)

I looked at all the games I want to buy this fall/winter and decided that it was too much of a money sink. I'll wait for a sale for those I like the most, and buy the others used. I prefer buying games used so that the developer gets paid, but if it comes down to paying 60 a game, not playing them at all, or buying them used... i'll take the latter. I think if they were still 50 bucks a game, i would just buy them all new.

Nope. I simply said I can "somewhat see", because the discs do cost more. The 360 was out first, and set the price at $60. Perhaps Sony just followed suit.

Is the Wii really different then those last gen consoles besides it's controller? It's still got those same old Nintendo titles that come back every generation. Why can't Nintendo come up with some new ideas? I mean at this point what's left to do, we have 3d online gaming. We have FPS, RTS, RPG and everything in between. A Wiimote isn't going to change that.

You should be able to find new versions for $50 or so shipped, you just have to look around. I have maybe 25 PS3 and 360 games, and I havent paid MSRP yet. I think Amazon's marketplace is good way to get used games. There really is no point in getting them new, as a games picture quality or experience doesnt degrade when used.

The controller is an entirely different way of games. For the last two DECADES companies have been making accessories that have tried and failed to come close to the Wii Remote. Remember the Power Glove? I remember when Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II were big, there was a ring-shaped sensor thing that you could stand in and actually punch and kick. I'm sure that thing sucked pretty badly. No way can I move fast enough to play those games like that. The problem is that those accessories were tacked on. The games weren't designed to be played that way. Nintendo finally figured it out - make the immersive accessory the DEFAULT, then the games will be designed around it. And that has happened, and it has worked very well. The Wii does lack an expansive library, but what good games there are are really great.

No, the Wii isn't really different from last gen consoles other than the controller, but the controller is a big freaking difference.

I lurk around Slickdeals.net and Cheapassgamer.com. I haven't paid full retail price for a game since............. World of Warcraft.

I even got Dragon Warrior 8 at launch for $24.99 and Final Fantasy XII the week it launched for $24.99 from Toys R' US.

Always look for a deal. They're always out there, waiting for you to find them.

They usually are cheaper - $50 compared to $60 on the 360 and PS3. I can't think of any Wii games that are $60, but I'm sure there are some.

i remember saving up for months to buy the 70$ SNES games. I get a decent amount of enjoyment out of playing the games, so I dont really care about the price as long as its around the 50$ range. If I think the game will be a 9 out of 10 game, i dont mind paying extra (esp if it comes with soundtrack).

ive paid up to 10-20 over us prices for imports. then again I live in hawaii and if I order it myself from playasia or whatever there isnt much of a difference.

Where in Hawaii do you live?

Most games I don't feel are worth $60. I paid $60 for Forza Motorsport 2 the day it came out because I felt it was worth it. I also just bought Virtua Tennis 3 on eBay for $30... that's a fair price to me. I would not have paid $60 for it when it was brand new.
