Is that normal?! He drives a 1994 Honda Civic EX with 100,000+ miles (bought it used).

EDIT: Called him to ask for details, and it turns out the fee includes sales tax for the car. Sorry to freak everyone out, thx for the info Bill. Still, that's a big chunk of change. We'll be ramen-ing it for a few weeks. (sorry to those people in Seattle paying $350+ for registration alone!)

OH... I don't own a car..but my friend in Colorado is laughing at California's high rates. he only had to pay 38 to get it registered, an old car.
