When you buy retail, you always overpay.
When you fill up gas, you're "overpaying" too.
Then don't buy gas.
Then don't buy anything at all. My point is that no matter what you buy, based on the statement you made, anything at all is "overpaying" because every level of production, manufacturing, shipping, etc. all has profit margins. The retailer could sell you something at his purchase price, probably below what many of them define as "cost," and while you might be happy, in reality, 50 different people made a profit except the end retailer. If you paid him with a CC, he probably lost a little bit on the whole thing, but maybe the opportunity cost is worth it.
Also, purchasing things online versus "retail" doesn't change anything, everyone still has their profit margins, that won't ever change. In today's market, it comes down to what the public is willing to pay for an item really, businesses charge what a product is worth, not what they "need" to charge or something.
On the whole, we all end up paying market price, and that's how you should judge things. Yes, some products have a different retail profit margin, but you'll find that on ANY quality/specialty item.
I'll stop here because I've probably gone off on a different topic than what you were discussing, but you need to post more information for a bold statement like that.

 The cheaper ones last as long too.
As a Google employee, I feel you should know that there is a small calculator tool in the search engine. 55 minus 48 will yield a result of $7.
Unfortunately, there isn't a feature for common sense, but most people usually have at least a small amount. If you had a little, you'd see that it's not that big of a price difference.
Edit: I'm not a Google employee, but pcslookout apparently claims that he was just given a job offer from them, and it doesn't make sense at all. I was referring to him being the google employee.
umm...i think they were being sarcastic?
Neither was - mugs knows what he's talking about and threw in some irony, but pcslookout was serious, search for his recent google offer thread, you'll find links to 30 or 40 other stupid posts of his.
