When you buy an expensive flashlight, you're paying for more than just brightness. You could get the bulb assembly and batteries for a SureFire for $20. That will generate bright light. You're paying for a flashlight that is not made of plastic. 😉 And honestly, you're paying quite a bit for the name.

I bought a Fenix L1D CE for $50, I use it all the time at work and at home. It's the perfect size and only uses 1AA battery. I've used a cheap mini mag at work but the batteries and bulbs kept dying every other day and it wasn't bright enough half the time.

I got my Fenix P1D CE for $70. it is hella bright...

Look outside at the sky. Can you see this?

I almost bought the P1D CE but it uses those expensive CR123A batteries and it doesn't have a push button on/off switch. I've seen how bright that is on high mode and its crazy how those little CREE LEDs put out so much light.

Crap, I just noticed prices have gone up. During Christmas, it was $19.95 for a 12 pack of Energizer E2 Lithiums. Now it's $31 for 16! Still much cheaper then stores, but I'm glad I don't waste them.

Anyone else have this many high-powered flashlights? (thread from late 2005)

You're paying for a flashlight that will saw through other flashlights! 😉 Putting a normal 6V SureFire lamp assembly in a cheap plastic flashlight is a bad idea. The 6V High Output lamp is not recommended for certain SureFire lights, as it has heat problems in both the G2 (melts the Lexan lens) and the E2 (requires a mod, the head is too small to sink/dissipate the heat).

Where do you get 16 CR123A's for $31?

Direct from SureFire is 12 for $21 plus shipping. I've seen other sites for roughly the same and cheaper shipping, but it's been a while and I don't know if they're still active.

 The cheaper ones last as long too.
As a Google employee, I feel you should know that there is a small calculator tool in the search engine. 55 minus 48 will yield a result of $7.

Unfortunately, there isn't a feature for common sense, but most people usually have at least a small amount. If you had a little, you'd see that it's not that big of a price difference.

Edit: I'm not a Google employee, but pcslookout apparently claims that he was just given a job offer from them, and it doesn't make sense at all. I was referring to him being the google employee.

umm...i think they were being sarcastic?

I bought a 'Krypton Bulb' flashlight at the dollar store today. It's got a rubber hand grip, extremely bright, and best of all only two AA's.

Works for me.

the one i got was inova xo3, this thing is brighter than my 6D cell mag light, but it uses those expensive 123 batteries. i'm not sure i can afford to actually use this light, lol.

as for the jokes, some of you guys could atleast be original. 😛

I spent $60 on my Surefire and it was worth every penny. It wont be the last flashlight that I ever buy. Oh, and I'll probably be spending $200 on a "pocket knife" when I get back to the states as well.

Good choice. Inova X, T series have great construction .

I haven't bought a flashlight for a while. I'm waiting for LED technology to settle down. Seems like Cree has a new led out every couple of weeks. I modded my HDS with an SSC led. It should be bright enough to match any new flashlights coming out now.

I spent $172 on a Surefire L2, and it was worth every penny. A good flashlight is hard to put a limiting value on.

I still don't quite understand why you'd pay so much for a flashlight... i.e. I don't know where such a high value comes from (other than the name.)

How do these compare to a 1 or 2 million candlepower cordless rechargeable spotlight that can be purchased for about the same price or less? Last week while I was out on the lake, my relatives decided to play with me from shore about 1/4 mile away; the light was blinding at that distance. It was a cheap rechargeable spotlight.

For me its because my surefire fits in my pocket. It goes on every mission with me and you never know when you need a flashlight. And when you do, it needs to be bright.

I also keep it in my nightstand at home, way more usefull there as well then something big and clunky.
