I have the new MSI DragonWriter 48x16x48 burner and I've used in once in like two weeks... I doubt I'll be jumping ship for something else anytime soon...

Yea they need to focus in on DVD drive now and come up with a standard to get the prices down.
I'm still waiting for a standard to get approved.
I want to burn some home movies with my digital camcorder.
Enough of the speed which only shaves a few seconds off anyway.
Whoever starts pumping out a faster DVD at a lower price will make a killing.

Newegg has the Liteon 52X24X52 in stock as of 10/17. Just got my order in. Been waiting to upgrade my 24x for awhile now, mainly for the RW increase. Now I'll probably have to wait around for 24x RW media.

I generally end up burning at 24X on my 40X drive because I buy the cheaper CDs in bulk. And this would do me what good?

I agree with MasterHoss, I want cheap DVD burners!

That and give me a good SCSI CD burner.

How cheap is cheap? I've been buying 48x media for ~$13 per 50 pk - $10 mail in rebate. $3 for a 50 pk of 48x media sounds hard to beat to me.

Sounds about the same deal I've been doing. Although, come to think of it I don't think I've actually received any of the mail in rebates I've sent in on CDs. Half the mail in rebates seem to be scams. I think I receive less than half the mail in rebates I've mailed in.

I've actually had good luck with my Best Buy CDR rebates. I've gotten them all within 2 weeks of submitting. Getting rebates from Staples has been a different story... still waiting on some from Thanksgiving of last year.

I am happy with my 8x4x32 drive and won't be upgrading anytime soon. In fact, I will probably wait until DVD burners become more mainstream and get one of those. 10 minutes is not a terribly long time to wait for a CD to burn in my opinion; especially since I can still use my computer just fine while it is burning.
It gets long when backing stuff up.

Backing things up on CD is long in any speed anyway. 😀 i'm gonna go get a USB HD... 😀

OOS at Mwave. Also Newegg's price is shipped, although I imagine they would end up being about the same after paying shipping at Mwave.

I read a article somewhere were most companies are pretty much done making faster CDR writing speeds. The fact is that there is very little time shaved off in recording and they are worried about cdr breakage.

Is that a prediction just on price? I would say less than $150 for a decent one, one probably will be able to find cheap ones for less than that.

Or is that also a prediction that DVD-R will win vs. DVD+R? I haven't been following which one is winning, so I can't make that prediction.

I still have my Yamaha 3200E (24x10x40x) that I bought for 200 dollars a few days after it came out. It can do a full cd in under 4 minutes. The fact that cd burners can't burn at full speed until the outter edges of the cd makes it not worth the upgrade. I agree in that, until a cd-burner can do a cd in under a minute without burning a hole through the cd, then i'll be interested. I am still waiting for DVD burners to become way way way way way more affordable. Also while I am replying here, anyone know if the Yamaha 3200E's Firmware is compatible with the new Yamaha CD-RW's firmware? Thanks! ;-)

w0rd.

eh, i like speed increases. seems to cut costs in cdr media, they gotta keep rolling out faster media and dump the "obsolete" slower speed stuff🙂

How fast does this thing burn a cd?

I burn a cd at 12x and it takes only 7 mins. and that's a 700MB disc...

The theoretical yield is 12x150kb = (1800kb/s)

(700MB * 1024kb) = 716800kb/ 1800kb/s = 398 seconds ~ 6 min 30 sec Which is on the money with my burner so,

if 52x150kb/s = 7800kb/s

Then 700MB * 1024kb = 716800kb/7800kb/s = 92 seconds! ~ 1 min 32 secs?

is this true?

Cause I know alot of people that can't burn with a 40x to get under 3 mins. Is there something wrong with my calculations or is it the IDE interface that messes up the theoretical yield?

actually a lot of new burners, use fullcav which means it gets up to speed quickly and stays there my crw-f1 immediately gets up to whatever speed its burning at, and then levels off so its time is a bit faster

The main thing here is Mt. Rainier support. Now you can burn CDRW's without the annying DirectCD app. Packet writing is supported natively by windows for Mt. Rainier drives. It should make CD-RW faster and more reliable

The last compelling CD writing speed increase was 24x. Since then, it has all
been modest incremental improvements in speed that really kick in only for long
source CDs.

On top of that, last week I was at a dinner party and spoke at length with someone
who is intimately involved in CDR blank manufacture and distribution. He told me
that 24x is the absolute fastest speed he recommends to anyone writing CDs
for any important/archival purpose. His quote: "Given the deficiencies of
the burners and the properties of the CD blanks, ALL our tests show that
if you go beyond 24x you risk creating discs with substantial errors. These results
hold across every manufacturer and every brand of blank. " He added that
Plextor and Sanyo manufactured drives do better in their tests than anyone
else's).

If you have a 24x burner you're happy with, I can't see any reason to upgrade
again until you replace it with a DVD-R(+/-/whatever) drive, unless you want
entree into the BSD club.
