Well, to report on this thing after a day's use...
I'd say the quality of the sound is pretty decent, nice that there are presets for the graphic eq so you can boost the frequencies that suit your taste. Earlier posters mentioned that poorer sound quality might be blamed on the cheap headphones that came with it. I'd concur, tried it with my audio technicas and the sound was as good as any other portable player I've used(CD, tape). I'll note that I haven't yet owned an mp3 player, so I can't really compare more specifically to this device type.
Also think the toggle thingy feels a little loose, and takes a little getting used to. Overall, the device's casing feels a little cheap.
Nice that this looks just like a bulkier usb flash drive, and can function as one as well. So you can carry around any type of file on it.
As far as recording, the quality was good enough. I trie it in a lecture hall, it picked up a speaking voice well enough that the words are distinct and audible, perhaps just a little muffled. I have yet to try it under higher decibel circumstances (ie concert/show), but certainly more portable (sneakable) than any cassette recorder. Encodes to either .wav or some other compressed file format. Wav seems like a no-brainer, since a minute of recording time only costs you about 1/4 MB. You could record 36 hours worth of stuff on an empty drive.
Id say pretty decent bang for the buck. BTW, mine came from cellular showroom, which was slammed by other posters - I was ready to jump on the bandwagon before I got mine within a week - $61 shipped. So, I guess do with that info what you will.
