with the Mueller investigation getting close to various Trumps and Pelosi breaking out her whips and chains in the House and stopping the wall, what better time for a wag the dog scenario. against a socialist, nonetheless.

not sure if Bolton is an idiot or if this was intentional but surely we can all agree that Maduro is not a military threat to the US or any other country, besides Venezuela.

Intentional and more clever than I would expect from John Bolton. He's usually more direct. I wonder if it was his idea to use the notepad?

As to the topic of the poll, I don't think Trump will pursue a military adventure in Venezuela. Despite his chest-thumping, Trump is wary of military action. There is no upside for the U.S. and Trump hasn't figured out how make money off of war yet.

South American nations should decide the fate of their disease ridden neighbor. The United States should play a support role for whatever the majority's decision is.

agreed. But there is also much humor to be found in that eternally stupid face of his, when paired with this kind of blatant un-subterfuge.

Almost certainly a ploy/message-but one that will backfire on the USA as it is used as anti-USA propaganda for the next several decades as proof of US imperialistic intentions in South America. Overall a stupid move.

Maybe he just finished watching "The Last Ship." This admin seems to be getting its information from movies and TV these days.

So they’re done milking “Sicario: Day of the Soldato” for immigration policy then??

He figured out that selling arms to the Saudis gives him a pipeline into that utterly corrupt money & into the political contributions of the MIC.

There's more than one way to make money.

This is bound to be just another in a VERY long list of official and unoffical US interventions in Central/South America. Relatively few have ever returned a good result for the people living down there and I'm skeptical pushing Maduro out (as shitty as he is) will actually lead to one. Unintended consequences often rule the day.

Also oil sanctions were just imposed. Evidence is piling up that this is a U.S. backed coup.

I’m still confused as to why this is a coup considering the National Assembly appears to be following the constitution against someone in power due to an obviously fraudulent election.

Please show me where in the constitution it says that the leader of NA can unilaterally declare elections void and himself the president. I've read article 233, it does not say that.

It says if the office of the presidency is left vacant the head of the National Assembly will take over in order to call new elections. As we all presumably agree the previous elections were rigged by Maduro it is impossible to consider the presidency validly occupied. As for the National Assembly unilaterally declaring the election invalid that normally wouldn’t be the case, that would be done by the National Electoral Council. The only issue there is that Maduro supporters already filled that body with loyalists in violation of the Venezuelan constitution.

There has been a coup in Venezuela, that much is certain. I personally think that coup was done by the person whose party rigged the national electoral council and then used control of that body to rig the election so they won. THAT is what a real coup looks like. I find it highly unlikely that if the situation were reversed and a US backed politician rigged the electoral system like this that you would say ‘well they were elected, any attempts by others to remove the US-backed government are engaging in a coup.’ Do you disagree?

Which is not the case. The end.

There are US backed governments throughout Latin America, and without looking, I doubt all of them had totally fair elections. An obvious example is Bolsonaro in Brazil, and no, I don't support a coup in Brazil. So there goes that theory.

Imperialism continues to hollow out this country's infrastructure funding, putting massive amounts of money into weapons manufacturers pockets, and by extension, politicians who continue to vote for Imperialism funding.

As long as Americans continue deluding themselves that we're not an Empire, this will continue.
