I'd rather have 2 of the 250's in RAID0

Certainly valid for some.

However when heat and power come into play a single higher capacity drive wins out. Plus in many cases higher capacity drives are also faster simply due to the higher data density. (i.e. 250x2 in RAID 0 might only be marginally faster then a single 500.)

i've had countless hard drives, and i think the only ones i've ever actually had fail were maxtors (probably like 3 of them). over a 15 years span.

We use 500GB Maxtor SATAs (not these specifically) in our mail severs (8 of them) that process an absolutely insane amount of mail each day (hundreds of thousands of mailboxes) -- haven't had any real problems with them.
