Yes, you are right. Why didn't they mention this in the Fry's add? Seems like it would add value, no?

Anyway, after looking at the PDF ( http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_...tion/data_sheets/product_line_card.pdf ) it seems like they recommend this drive for secondary storage, nearline use, and backups... not for primary use (I guess they reserve that for the top of their enterprise line?).

Anyway, seems like a good deal but the recommendation for usage as a "nearline" drive is a little odd to me.

I just rec'd my Outpost order, here's the info on the drive I got:

Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500
Model 7H500F0
500 GB SATA 3.0Gb HDD

Mfg. Date: 22AUG2006, made in Singapore (2) A0919

Since I have a 320 gig Seagate 7200.10 SATA drive to compare this with side by side I am convinced they are different drives entirely. The review I read on Xbit seems to support this notion as well: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/seagate-barra-720010_9.html

Bottom line - good drive for the money, not a Seagate 7200.10.

How are the noise levels compared to the 7200.10?

The Maxtor is louder at idle and during seek read/write operations - though it's not excessively loud by any means. Of the 3 SATA II drives I have to compare, the Seagate 7200.10, a WD2500KS and the Maxtor I'd rank the Maxtor loudest.

I just bought yesterday a Maxtor 200GB ATA/100 7200rpm/ 8 mb cache at Frys for $49.99, Not a SATA, but works fine with my external backup case, Which I bought at Tiger direct doe $19.99. lol
