Looking to spend $500 on a new rig.I already got a moniter, keyboard & mouse so none of that is needed.i need to system to be as quick as it can & also would like to have a nice size hd but need it to be really fast also.i also want a system/case that isn't gonna run so hot.my current system runs so hot it makes the room seem like i got the heat on or something.will be using this for encoding/playing music & basic internet use.no type of gaming or any other crazy stuff.well like this to be able to handle to burners burning at the same time.

Could maybe do $600 but all depends on what better stuff i can get.

How about an operating system, does the budget need to allow for WinXP Pro/Home? Do you have RAM that can be re-used in the system? What's your monitor made for, analog VGA or DVI?

I wish I could squeak an Athlon64 2800+ into your $500 price range, because with Cool & Quiet enabled, they put out very little heat unless they've got a reason to. I'm working on a Newegg wish-list to see what I can come up with, anyway 🙂

Your Dell monitor, is it equipped with DVI?

Haha, I knew nick1985 would show up with a build for you 😀 *curses his crummy 56k connection* Maybe I should just plagarize... LOL 😉

Ok, so here's the beastie I was working on: more HDD, less CPU, VIA Envy24 audio card since I heard they were nice for music, CDRW/DVD-ROM drive, and a floppy drive even. Wish List

Nothing wrong with the A64 🙂 Now he's got options.

With the recent price drop of the A64, I think the Athlon 64 2800+ is definately a better choice now whereas before it went either way.

K looks like i'll go with the AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail. Now i just need to find a nice mobo along with some pretty good ram.

So as of right now i think i'm gonna to get the Athlon 64 2800 & the Chaintech VNF3 board.

Those 2 products total up to about $242 so that leaves me with around $360 for everything else.

P.S. wasn't acouple of online vendors running a sale on some type of cpu/mobo combo on those Athlon 64's for like $199 ? i'm trying to build a budget system but will like quality stuff also.Just dont wanna throw any cheap part in this just because it can save me $$$.

Also are Hitachi hard drives better then western digitals ? i want a really fast drive.

I'd look at something else besides the 9200, that thing is a POS. Try and get a cheap 9100, that'll play some games without any problems. Hard drive speeds aren't going to make that much of a difference.

i rest my case

This system is a perfect example of where a motherboard w/ integrated graphics should be used. You could get a very nice nForce2 setup w/ IGP. There are tons of options for the P4 as well. I'm not sure what's available for the A64.

I would get the Abit NF7-M w/ a 2500+ mobile, 1GB of PC3200, 160GB HD w/ 8mb cache, DVD burner, and spend the rest on a nice monitor. 🙂

Edit: You don't need teh monitor so just save yourself some money. 🙂
