roundabouts are the most evil invention ever. people can't figure out how to turn when they have a protected signal, what are they going to do when there is oncoming traffic?

I definitely prefer roundabouts.

All of the new subdivisions here have roundabouts at main intersections, and it really does improve traffic flow.

i totally agree. I have been to England and experienced them and i have seen them put in a couple places in Indianapolis very successfully. I used to wait at this stop light for 5-7 minutes every day and now it is less than 1 minute before i get in the roundabout

How did they make room for them? Demolish all the stuff near the corners?

are you kidding me? 2, 2 lane roads have PLENTY of room to make a roundabout. To be exact, i have seen a 2 lane roundabout before too, but the people in the inside lane can get screwed 😛

I don't see how it would work everywhere.
I live near a rounabout that also has traffic lights, and you need the traffic lights to be able to cross the road. During busy times there is never a break in traffic long enough to cross during. That's not safer IMO.
Ever heard of crossing bridges?

After living on Hilton Head Island with two traffic circles in the most congested part of the island, I can say, without a doubt, that I hate them.

Maybe those were just done poorly, I dunno. But I do know I hate them. I mean, really fscking hate them.

Great idea. I love roundabouts. I wish there were more around here so people would be less afraid of them - ha.

no, they aren't evil. people are just stupid.

As much as I hate those stupid little traffic circles, statistics do show that accidents increase whenever a light is put it.

Of course, I hate statistics more than roundabouts, so I dont know that it matters much.

The roundabouts here are too narrow. A fire truck cannot get through. I guess it'll suck to be those residents when they catch fire.

when i was in nairobi last year i saw only 2 stop lights and the population is over 2.5 million people.

it is ironic that the first round-a-bout was in the US.

"It works well because it is dangerous, which is exactly what we want. But it shifts the emphasis away from the Government taking the risk, to the driver being responsible for his or her own risk.

:Q

I don't mind roundabouts. They seem to work really well when there are multiple roads converging and heavy traffic.

That being said, a lot of people seem to be scared of them. I used to go through "Suicide Circle" in Des Plaines, IL
frequently. It lets a lot more traffic through then a regular traffic light signal..

OMFG NO!!!!! We are getting rid of them in NJ like icecream on a winter day. They are crap for traffic!! LOLOL They are fine at first, then they become congested as hell, so we are finally spending millions to get rid of them.

The biggest drawback to roundabouts IMO is that they take up quite a bit more space. Otherwise, we have them in a few places here and they seem to work well except for the inattentiveness of the typical American driver.

Man if we put those in here in Northeast Ohio it would be like a demolition derby. Although, that may not be a bad thing, I'll be looking for a job with the local fire/EMS later this year so them being busy is a good thing. 😀
