Look at the ingredients or the label; the main 'energy' source is caffeine. That's not energy, that's a stimulant. There's a huge difference.

5-Hour Energy only contains 4 Calories. 4! Do you know what a Calorie is? By definition, it is the chemical energy stored in food and used by your body. So, by definition, there is virtually NO energy in 5-Hour Energy.

What's the other thing they tout? B vitamins. I hate to break it to you, but vitamins don't provide energy. The B group DOES help your body process food energy, but most people get enough from their daily diet and the body stores so much B in your liver that it would takes YEARS to become deficient.

Just look at how neither the National Institute of Health nor the Mayo Clinic list 'energy' as a trait of B vitamins.

If you like 'energy drinks' that's fine, but don't fool yourself into thinking you're getting anything but a butt-ton of empty calories from sugar and/or a whopping dose of the stimulant Caffeine.

I'm sorry, but maybe the boost from sugar and caffeine is exactly what some of us need. And those B vitamins that help your body break down food? Well considering most of us will have food in us when we drink those it'll help get more energy from food ya? Seems like it does what it's supposed to.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Just realize that 5-Hour Energy, with little sugar and 4 calories, is noting BUT caffeine.

Nope. Your body gets 100% of the B you need from the food, and if not, has plenty stored in your liver. Getting 2000% extra does nothing. According to NIH and Mayo, there is no upper level of B intake, as it shows no sign of toxicity, but anything above 100% is ineffective.

Cocaine will do it. A lot of guys in the military use it to stay awake.... I'm sure it could help you stay awake for your Home-Ec. group project with minimal side effects.

Not sure why anyone would ingest $5 / can shit with questionable ingredients when coffee is so nummy and cheap (except for $tarbuck$). I guess it's trendy... Speaking of which, when is Apple's iEnergy coming out?

$tarbuck$ coffe isn't really bad. They use good beans, just overroasted a bit.
Also, it's not "cheap", but it's not THAT expensive ... Assuming you don't brew your own and you go out for coffee, it's only like 25 cents more then McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts .... Like $2 for a large (or whatever the hell they call it) coffee.

I usually just buy 8 oclock beans at the grocery store, or world market beans ... It's a lot cheaper, and the coffee is delicious ...

Have you had any sort of energy drink before?

I assume it's all the same stuff, sans soda.

I drink sodas and coffee all the time in decent quanities. I've consumed multiple Rockstars, Monsters, Red Bulls, etc. No problems with those.

The 5 Hour Energy is different though. It contains a bunch of Vitamin B, while the usual energy drinks contain Taurine and Guarine and stuff.

Monster is stacked with 200% of B6 and B12 per can...

This 5 hour has 8333%. I drank 1/4 so thats 2000%

No-Doz caffeine pills for me when I need to be alert, yet uncomfortably jittery. I usually take <100mg, too. Any more than that is nearly unbearable.

They're a very cheap way to get caffeine, and are much more portable than any drink.

I drank energy drinks on occasion in college, but I never got much from them. They usually don't have THAT much caffeine, maybe several pops worth, and I don't get much from caffeine other than to wake me up some. Some of them taste real good though. I ended up just buying No-doz. About $3 for 90 200mg pills. I need real stimulants for real energy and even then sometimes it ain't shit. :)

I've not heard of cocaine use in the military. I can't see how that would be effective at all. Adderall or ritalin maybe, and more likely adrafinil or modafinil.

So is there any evidence that huge doses of vitamin B-12 actually gives you more energy? I've always thought it was bullshit.

I know B-12 shots work. Anything else... I have no clue.

vitamin B is basically the raw materials that makes up the energy juice in your body. But unless the materials are made into the said juice, it's not going to become energy.
In other words, vitamin B on its own won't give you energy.
All energy drinks usually come with vitamin B.
Basically if you don't have enough vitamin B from your normal diet(few do, especially if you eat few whole grain foods), you won't have enough raw materials to make the juice when the caffeine cranks the energy drinks has the energy juice machine in full power. The heart is pumping blood faster to make it work faster. Your digestive system shuts down in order to disperse more energy to your brain. This is why caffeine tend to destroy appetite, and often leads to nausea and vomiting.

Personally, I get very nauseated off caffeine, or any stimulant in general, including my body's own natural stimulants, although it only happens a fraction of the time, so it seems like there's something else that is also required at the same time.
Perhaps you just has one bad experience because your body wasn't in the right state for stimulants at the time?
But going through hours of projectile vomiting may possibly deter anyone from daring to give it another try.

Eh, i really am trying to stop drinking caffeine...

Energy drinks do so little for me.

I can have a few Red Bulls in an evening & still have it do pretty much nothing for me.
