I'm holding out for the one with programable OLCD screens on each key.

That thing is badass.

got a link/pic, even to a prototype?

dont hold your breath. estimates range into the tens of thousands of dollars (USD) per keyboard.

WTF? You must be rounding up to the nearest ten-thousand then, I've heard as much as 600 and as low as 350 MSRP.

Early estimates states something like one offs custom ordered number pads would be something like $500.

They will obviously be super expensive forever. I've never once heard of a computer component starting out expensive and dropping to a reasonable price.

A keyboard with over 100 3/4" individual LCD's is NEVER going to be cheap. Even if they can somehow mass produce these, they'll never get the price under $200 this decade.

I don't know about you, but my keyboard budget isn't even half of that.

This is what confuses me, people have no problem spending hundreds of dollars on hardware that will be obsolete in 6 months and yet freak out about spending a grip on quality hardware that's you'll keep through a few different computers(keyboard, monitor, mouse)

I actually have the saitek keyboard, although I got it on black friday of last year, so it had a $25 or so rebate. Yeehaw.

Edit: I should note that it's not the exact same model as the one shown, however. Mine doesn't have a dimmer switch, and the only color available is blue. Looks roughly the same though, and it actually feels quite nice.

I'm up for it. Between arthritis, carpal and 10-16 hour work days, it'll be worth it.

I couldn't agree more.

I've been through several different hardware configs. Yet have stuck with the same mouse-keyboard and monitor setup throughout.

Dude... Do you honestly think that the Optimus keyboard probably is going to be a "quality" product? With that many individual LCD screens, odds are that some of the keys will start failing within six months of owning the product. You'll have to keep replacing them constantly to keep it working, and I'm sure that the replacement parts won't be cheap.

The more I think I about this keyboard, the more impractical it seems. It's vaporware all the way.

I wasn't refering to the Optimus specifically(or really at all), I'd obviously wait a bit before I bought one unless my income increased exponentially tommorow and had tons of cash to throw around, but at this point all of our talk is just conjecture.

That Logitec board does look quality though.

I was just making a point that people drop thousands of dollars on top of the line video cards and processors and then skimp on the components that they actually physically interact with on a daily basis. The same components that will probably stick around for more than a few video card or processor upgrades.

None of those beat my G15.

I wish they'd come out with a quality keyboard with larger keys, spaced just a bit farther apart, for us people with large hands. I'm constantly hitting 2 keys at once with these fat farkin fingers...REALLY fvcks up my speed on typing tests...

I don't think that OLED keyboard will ever pan out.
The problem is OLEDs suffer from burn in and don't have terribly long life times.
Another fun fact is each color degrades at a different rate, so your keyboard will get tinted over time.

I think the only option for this keyboard would be an eink or a cholesteric LCD display. Unfortunately these displays don't illuminate light, but at least they won't degrade.

That optimus keyboard rocks my world, if it was like 100 dollars id buy it as soon as it was available... but 1200 no way.

I doubt that they'll hold up well to being pounded on daily, either. LCD screens weren't designed to take the kind of abuse that keyboard keys handle every day.

ehhh, I'll stick with my Model M. Me thinks those in the article aren't even mechanical keyboards!
That being said I've been seriously eyeballing the Das Keyboard 2, now THAT keyboard looks SWEEET.

that's $500 one isn't anything new...we've been ordering something very similar to that for an older lady at my job who has extreme arthritis. it's a beige version and it runs about $250 from england.
