5 cd games?? Why don't they start releasing games on DVD?!

And DVD drives are the devil.
3 computers (different computers) and each one had its DVD drive fail. They suck.

But, yeah, not enough people have DVD drives at the moment.

I have a DVD reader in this comp that came from my old Dell. It still works, was the primary disk drive for a long time, and was orignally obtained in 1998.

So thats what, six years old now? and still ticking. Maybe they wouldn't fail if you got a quality brand . .

One of the DVD readers was in a Dell (came with it 😛) Under warranty though, so it got replaced.

The last time I suggested this, I got yelled at.

Look at it this way, you have $800 in computer equipment, shell out the $30 for a DVD drive.

I've jyust bought International SUperstar Soccer Pro Evolution 3 which for all you non-Europeans is the best sports game ever to be released. Unless you hate football (soccer) of course, lol.

As for DVD drive, i've just bought a black MSI 16x Speedstar drive for £30. Seriously, these days they are so cheap it's silly not to have one. I'm also getting a black Plextor 708a 8x DVD writer soon, for £135 they're also a steal. Hmm, wonder when 16x DVD writers will be released though...

So what happens when games start being 10 cds big? People will start getting annoyed..

im still MORE annoyed that games like UT2K3 cost 40 or 50 bucks new(where i have to pick it up and wait in line after i get the money for it) and all 3 cds come in a paper wrapper....but the free aol discs come in a full size dvd case that aol paid to have shipped to you so they could _maybe_ get your money.

silent hill 3 come in a jewel case by any chance.

PC games in the UK are at most $45 new, and we have higher taxes than you, and you have a weak dollar, before they woul dhave been about $40 (about 6 months ago that is).
And we get DVD style boxes that can take 3 DVD's on one spindle type thing, no paper here (well, UT2k3 came with all 3 discs on a spindle type thing, NFS: U came in a DVD box for one DVD, and a paper case thing for the other CD, which is fine, because one disc stays in the box, and the other stays in a CD drive 🙂)

Not a game but microsft is putting their server software on DVD disc now. You get a package with a DVD and several CD's. DVD does not require switching disk so that is cool.

That and if game makers wanted more people to switch to DVD, then why not offer game X at $39.99 with 3 cd's in paper holders or for $37.99 offer the game on 1 DVD in a hard case.

you have to start to question though, if the computer doesn't have a dvd-drive or has one that is below 16x...what are the chances that it could run the latest games?

One thing to keep in mind is that up until now, there has not really been any form of copy protection available for DVD-ROM games, so obviously, publishers have held off. That said however, Safedisc now supports DVD(<sarcastic>yay</sarcastic>), so we should see some DVD releases soon. I know at the very least, UT2K4's collector's edition is on the list.

PS rocadelpunk, speed really isn't much of an issue. DVD drives quickly ramped up to 16x; just about everyone with a desktop should have at least 8x, which is perfectly fine

As a mechanic we use shop software in place of printed manuals. Alldata comes on approximately 30 CDs (I haven't counted so I am not sure, but the number is about right) not to mention the installation CD. Alldata on DVD is a total of 10 DVDs including the installation disk. Splinter Cell came on 3 CDs and I am not mad about that one bit. Sure it takes up a bit more space, but not like Alldata would.

IMO, when PC makers start putting just DVD-ROMs of some sort in their machines will you see game publishers start using DVDs.

DVDs also read much slower. So if the game heavily accesses the drive there is a higher overhead on the system resources.
A 16X DVD-ROM can read up to 6MB/s. A 48X CD-ROM can read up to 6.4MB/s. (both figures from CDR-labs, outside transfer rate)

Much slower, eh?

um. no. my 16x DVD-ROM used to rip at rates topping 20 MB/s on DVD and CD's at over 7 MB/s, outside transfer rate of course. that's continuous, too, not the burst rate. hell, it used to read 5-7 MB/s on the inner platters of DVD's.

edit: it was a Lite-On, in case you're wondering. and i use the past tense because it died after about 300 DVD rips, hundreds of CD rips, and lots of movie watching/CD playing.

Well, if a 16x DVD writer can theoretically write 4.7GB of date in 3:30 minutes and a 52x CD writer takes the same time to back up 800MB of data... is that not telling you that DVD have a far higher proportionate transfer rate than CD's...?

There are no 16X DVD writers or at least in the market.

Hence the... " Use Google and search for info". lol. Either way, a quick Google search will also take you to the fastest transfer speeds available for each format.

16xDVD = 21.4 MB/S
52x CD-ROM = 7.8MB/S

I didn't specify, but what I was questioning is not the speed of the dvd drive, but the ability of the computer to run the game.

BTW, in 1998 or so I got Baldurs Gate and its expansion, that was 6 discs 😛. DVD what?

But months later you were also given an option to send in all 6 discs for 1 dvd of the game. I remember that as the last cool thing a game company did for people with dvd drives.
