5 cd games?? Why don't they start releasing games on DVD?!

Ugh.. I just found out Silent Hill 3 for the PC takes up 5 cds..

Why can't developers release DVD versions of their games?? How much bigger are they going to make things? Games are going to be getting bigger and bigger.. keeping them on CD is not all that convenient for us people who play them..

And DVD drives are the devil.
3 computers (different computers) and each one had its DVD drive fail. They suck.

But, yeah, not enough people have DVD drives at the moment.

...because nobody releases software on DVD, because the number of people that have a DVD drive in their comp is still small, because nobody releases software on DVD, because the number of people that have a DVD drive in their comp is still small...

It's a viscious cycle 😀

I think game developers are scared to make the move to DVD. It's obvious from the number of CDs games are these days, that moving to DVD is logical. However, noone wants to do DVD only and get burned on sales.

Wasn't Silent Hill 3 released on both DVD and CDs though?

DVDs also read much slower. So if the game heavily accesses the drive there is a higher overhead on the system resources.

actually, baldur's gate was released in a 1 dvd set sometime after the original 5 cds. i think around 2000. There was a dvd game sampler in a magazine last month. a couple others have done it, can't remember though.

the x-files game was something like 7 cds. at least that's how big the backup copy was when i saw it listed.

A 16X DVD-ROM can read up to 6MB/s. A 48X CD-ROM can read up to 6.4MB/s. (both figures from CDR-labs, outside transfer rate)

Much slower, eh?

I don't think they sell anything slower than 16X anymore....

I was spelling bee champ in eighth grade, so I've paid my dues already. In other words, sue me 😛

Hell if they sell 16x lite-on dvd drives at wal-mart of all places, I think it's time to start putting games on dvd's.

I have a DVD reader in this comp that came from my old Dell. It still works, was the primary disk drive for a long time, and was orignally obtained in 1998.

So thats what, six years old now? and still ticking. Maybe they wouldn't fail if you got a quality brand . .
