4890 $199

I shouldn't have logged on last night when I got home. Ended up ordering the MSI 4890.. Grrr.. But it's certainly a good deal and it'll be a while before I get one for that price from the Egg, so I'm in a self-justifying mood.

Uh, it doesn't matter. Just linked another good deal from that same website that was listed here (mainly because I was surprised at some of the deals they had - not that I'm pushing that card). I hope you aren't serious and if you are, get a grip. Sorry to offend your tender sensibilities.

This thread belongs in the Hot Deals subform anyway (so please jump the O.P. for putting it here if you're that pedantic).

Im loving the fact that about a week after launch, the fastest (single gpu) card that ATi offers is under $200. NV's top card isnt far behind. Not too long ago, they were $600 or more, months after launch.

Will be nice to see the trend continue with DX11 releases and beyond. We've seen now that top performing cards can be designed and produced with cost control (and margin caps) in mind. It's been a reality check on all levels, manufacturer to consumer..

Are Nvidia's comparable cards even close in price? The GTX 285, while overall faster, is around $300. The GTX 275 is $250, same for the GTX 280. According to most benchmarks, the 280 and 275 are beaten by the 4890 at 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 and tie/pull ahead at 2560x1600.

But as far as price/performance? I'd have to say AMD is still ahead. At $183, the MSI 4890 OC at eWiz is only around $20 more than a GTX260 216.

They are very comparable in price AND performance. The 4890 went down in price pretty quickly but I'm sure the 275 will follow.

And here in Canada the 260 on sale has been cheaper than the 4870 1GB on sale for a while now.

I was half guessing that they were. I knew that they were more, but not by how much. Ive been out of the loop for awhile, and dont follow video cards like I used to. Just got back to the States.. things have changed. $183 for the fastest single CPU card, a week after its release is crazy. I paid $630 for two 6800GTX a month after launch.

Lol.
If you had gotten luckier with the timing and done SLI'd 8800GTX's you'd still be golden even now. That was what, 3 years ago now? I remember a thread about a guy who had that setup and was looking to upgrade and we were all like..."well what you have is still the best....so....sorry you can't upgrade yet".

AMD laying the smackdown. Man I want to upgrade badly. Going to try to wait for one more generation.

Welcome back dude. Glad to see you're back and ok. Hopefully you'll stay back and out of that hell over there.

Definitely nice price on the 4890.
