You can also find the 4870's on Ebay and if you combine that with the 20-25% off through Windows Live, it becomes a very good deal. I paid $266 shipped to my door because of the Live cash back.

Ebay sellers are jacking prices through the roof now though because of that and the cashback amount is back down to 10% at the moment.

Prices at Buy.com are somewhat reasonable. The only one in stock currently is the VT at $308.99, but the Palit is priced at $299.99 free shipping. I stupidly didn't take the opportunity to put in a pre-order for the VT a few days ago, when it was on backorder but priced at $299.99. I figured it was too risky not knowing when they'd actually get them in stock.

Oh well, spilled milk and all that. Hopefully the situation will improve by the 8th -- I think that was the date given for widespread availability.

nice! If I got $300 bucks for a vid card now, I'd get this card for sure, best performance/price ratio. Only if da egg don't go over MSRP but well no one else have this now so they can afford to go over MSRP.

I've received my Sapphire card (4870) and it's the worst video card packaging I've ever seen. They wrap the card with anti-static bubble bag, and there is a form padding on only one side of the box. Accessories on the other side. (Meaning the accessories are a 'cushion' for the card) Thankfully the card looks fine, but I am stressing the hell out of it to make sure. So far I looped 3DMark06 GPU tests (8AA/16AF) for 6 hours and Realtime HDR for 2 hours.

*sigh* It looks like $309.99 is now the de facto MSRP. That's the price for all of the 4870s at teh Egg, and it also seems to be the price at TD/CompUSA. Even VisionTek's own online shop wants $309.99 for one (btw, they do seem to be in stock over there).

What's wrong with that?

They're pretty much a steal at that price as it is, very high bang for buck there.

Principles, man, principles 😛! I just can't bring myself to knowingly buy something priced higher than MSRP. Now, if ATI had decided from the start that the MSRP would be $310 (or even $325), and the eTailers were selling them for that price with free shipping, I probably would have said, "so be it", and ordered one. Funny how that works huh?

QFT, excellent card, excellent price. excellent bang/$

if the price went up by LESS then 10$ on a 300$ part is there really a point to complain?

I am betting AMD is giving us those delicious prices to put a damper on nvidia's physX approach. Brilliant strategy, and delicious for us consumers.

i thought next month we get the 4870x2... with 1GB that is shared across both GPUs. (none of that 2x512mb crap)

Finally got what I wanted 😀 - VisionTek 4870 for $299.99 shipped. But curses for tomorrow being the 4th of July holiday! No chance of it arriving tomorrow 🙁.

I got my Visiontek 4870 from Newegg yesterday. Interestingly, it's a complete reference card, no monster alien sticker at all. Guess Visiontek is either saving a couple cents or is boxing them up so fast they don't want to waste time to decorate. I had planned on posting impressions of the card but my computer died yesterday after I installed the 4870; I don't think it was the video card but I think either my motherboard or CPU got fried b/c it won't post at all. I smelled a faint burning smell. Not good.

I picked up my visiontek HD4870 at antares digital, they are local to me.

The woman running the show is Lily, she sees to be on top of things.

She had 1 more Visiontek left and she wasn't expecting another batch for 2 weeks.

She is expecting a supply of Sapphire cards next week though.

$297 plus tax out the door.

And I also picked up 2 Samsung 1TB drives for $165 plus tax each.

Thank goodness. Hopefully mine won't come with the sticker either. I prefer the ATI cards either plain red, or red with the silver racing flames. I hate these over-the-top stickers with dogs/orcs/cyborg frogs/etc (are you listening MSI? XFX?).

Sorry to hear about your rig.

Got my Visiontek HD4870 from the Visiontek direct store today.

The card does not have an alien design, as others have said, but I don't really care. (Especially since it doesn't ship with mass effect anyway... would have been a nice bonus) I'll be installing it as soon as I get home.

The VisionTek direct store is an actual B&M shop? Where is it? CA?

EDIT: Never mind, I misunderstood you. You probably meant your card arrived in the mail from the VT store.

Ok you got on my case for abbreviating technology as tech...so now I have to get on your case for abbreviating Visiontek as VT

Yeah, I get the feeling that these coolers are advertising billboards first and cooling devices second - how else can they be so badly trounced by some of these relatively humble looking aftermarket solutions? I've long since given up and pretty much assume I'm going to be replacing it by default.
