I play Skyrim on Ultra with my 4870 in 1920 x 1080 and it's fine. Not pulling 60 FPS or anything, but things look pretty sweet. My card is crazy loud, though.

really, im not sure if we were ever at a point where a $50 video card could play virtually every game at hd res with great framerates even when paired with a budget cpu. i bet you could build a real gaming rig now for $400 brand new
 
I did just that. $330 shipped (hardware only no Op system) using this card. Pieced it together since Black Friday til this video card.

I also included the Monitor, keyboard, and mouse in the price as I have extra sets of speakers.

I subbed the Xfire MB from SuperBiz for $65, 550W Xfire ready PSU for $65 from the Egg, throw in a second card for Xfire rig, and Rosewill gaming case for $35 (more and bigger fans to push cool air). My son will enjoy this new rig for Xmas.

I'm considering getting 2 of these for crossfire, however I only have a Corsair 400W power supply. It's an older rig, processor is Phenom X4, 2.5 GHz (125 W).

What power supply would you recommend for my situation? Also, if my mobo supports crossfire, do I need some sort of cable to connect the two 4870's together?

Nice job. I think you got the idea here. I actually enjoy piecing together a system over time more than buying one all at once.
 
FYI, ATI 4xxx serise video cards cannot deliver un-decoded DTS-HD or DTS-MA audio signal to receivers. I had to buy a 5570 added to my 4850 because of that reason.
 
How big of a difference should I expect going from my 8800 gts 512 to this on an OC'd Q6600? Skyrim pushes my 8800gts to it's limits.

I could be wrong, but I don't think he was asking if it was worth $55 as much as he was wanting to know if the performance gain would be quite noticeable compared to a 8800GTS. i.e., should he get something that is substantially higher in performance to see an improvement in Skyrim.

I have an HD4890, which is similar, but a little faster. Mine was way too noisy with the stock fan. I bought an Accelero, and now have it mostly passively cooled- just a slow spinning quiet fan blowing across the Accelero. With the stock cooler, I was downclocking the card to keep the noise down or wearing headphones. So these aren't great cards if you like a quieter system while gaming. The card is quiet while not gaming with the stock fan.
 
I just got mine today, I'll have to test it out later. The packaging from Newegg was certainly overkill. The video card box itself though was just medium white box with foam padding protecting the video card in an anti static bag. Its a big video card though, particularly compared to my 4670.

Lots of thoughts and comments. Like said previously, the graphics card is huge; it successfully fits in my Antec 300, but the positioning is awkward with my motherboard. I foolishly had not checked what the card required for pci-express power connectors. I thankfully had 2 X 6 pin pci-express power adapters on my backup power supply. I played Skyrim on High at 1920 x 1080 without issues. I can hear a periodic wind up of the graphics card fan, but I do not think the graphics card is loud. At idle it might be slightly more noticeable than my 4670. When playing Skyrim, I still did not think it was very loud, though more noticeable than at idle. Granted, I have yet to seriously stress the card.

Suffice to say, I think this was a good deal.
