I got one of the non-Liteon ones, serial AFA blah blah. Firmware is 100c. How do you go about finding out the actual manufacturer? People have previously said AOpen, Accesstek or Optirite??
Anyway it works but it's kind of a pain in the ass. I had to disable DMA (!) and change to cheapass media to get 40x burns- very strange. I first used Ritek/SONY CDRs and DMA enabled and no go - locks on burn. Then looked at the Cendyne Techsupport BBS (here) and saw lots of complaints about this Cendyne 40x burner with the AFA serial. Check it out.
Works now tho.........

Just got my drive. It's a CW 4001 which I guess is one of those Optirons or whatever. It's a finickey little thing. Shows up as ATAPI 40x/12x/48x or something very generic. Firmware shows up as 100c but it works with DMA enabled. I can only get it to burn at 32x in Nero, but that might be because of media. Still, seems to burn fine. Wished it was a Lite-On, but after a little tinkering I got it to show up in hardware profiles and burn in Nero so if it keeps working alright, then I guess I can't ask much more for $20. Thanks for the deal.

Picked up one of these drives when I found one of the 120 gig maxtor external hard drives on clearance. Used the $30 off $150 coupon and am now sending in the $30 mir and $20 mir. Not a bad shopping day when when all is said and done it will have cost me $89.50 for both items. I picked the items up in McDonough, GA (last one of each on the shelf though). Lite-on's, lite-on's and more lite-ons. I now have one in every machine, plus 2 extras sitting here. Oh the hell I go through with all these cendyne deals. ;-) Enjoy.

I hate this drive. It tested fine in my machine, but when I moved it to my brother's (who I originally bought it for in the first place) it just hangs on writes at 2%. I eventually just gave up. God, what POS.

Yeah, far less stable and easy to use than our fave LiteOns.........Oh well, the point is it was $20!!! (AR)
Looking on the Cendyne tech support board (support.cendyne.com) they finally posted an updated firmware (120F) and confirmed that the drive is really an Accesstek. I flashed the drive and it works better but I haven't had time to test out all the different variables -
I currently have DMA Off but now it's not so choosy about CDR media.
Good luck

Hey "ThegoodDoc",

We must be on the same wave length. I bought the exact same combo (the clearance 120gb USB drive and the Cendyne 40 cdrw) today in Pueblo Colorado. Not a bad deal for $87 after rebate....:)

Just a heads up. Make sure you guys get your rebates in on this, in fine print on the rebate form it says:

"Your request must be postmarked within 15 days of purchase."

A bit shorter than some rebates so don't dawdle!!
