Taken from the CD Freaks Web site:
Verbatim, all verbatims is manufactured by Lite-On.
Have you tried to update the firmware yet??

not yet, the system it's going into is awaiting a motherboard.. namely an nforce2 :) I probably won't bother flashing it though, no real point (i did my 32x because ppl claimed it burned faster... i didn't see any noticable difference).

The one I got has a serial number starting AFA. I believe it is manufactured by AOPEN (CRW4048). Is this "bad"? It appears that AOPEN has decent support on their website. What am I sacrificing versus the Lite-On unit???

Yeah I just got the same - a non-liteon drive with AFA as the beginning of the serial.
In BIOS and in Nero it's just identified as "CDRW 40X/12X" no name.
Oh well - you takes your chances...............should be fine anyway. $23 bux shipped for a 40X burner!

Why are you guys purchasing this Cendyne, when a much better drive sits on the shelf at Staples right next to it??

Here's what I posted in another thread last evening:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually, you can get a Lite-On 48x/24x/48x via the following method (which I proved to work successfully myself earlier today):

Staples has the Memorex 48x/24x/48x drive on sale for $69.99. Head to Huge Wallet and look for a $10 off Staples coupon that you can use in the store (or, look for an on-line coupon if you're going to place your order on-line.) So, now you're down to $59.99 for the drive. Staples then has a $20 rebate on this drive. Finally, you're down to $39.99 + tax for this drive and you don't have to wait on your shipment from Dell.

This drive is definately a Lite-On drive. A few of the CDR/W sites have indicated that *all* of the Memorex drives are manufactured by Lite-On.

Now, to heat the deal up a little, the drive has the newest chipset - the "6" chipset in it. You'll have access to full CAV writing with this drive - not just a variation, plus the drive is fully compliant with Mt. Ranier packet writing software. Finally, there is firmware available so you can update the drive so it'll burn at 52x. This drive also comes with the retail version of Nero. My drive was manufactured during August of 2002.

So, tell me - why would anyone buy the 52x drive from CompUSA for $69.## after a rebate when such a hot deal exists at Staples with the Memorex drive?

Personally, I don't care about going to a 52x burn -- quite yet. Actually, 48x is pretty darn fast. As a quick test, I made a CloneCD backup of Mac OS 10.2. I put in a generic CDR of which I didn't even know the speed that it was rated for. I then proceeded to dump the backup to this blank CD. What was the total time to cook the disk you ask? Just a couple of seconds under 3 minutes. Now, is that hot or what??

For any of you peeps in Northern Virginia-land, the Chantilly Staples still has one of these drives left. However, I suspect a lot of Staples stores have these drives in stock because a lot of people have been buying the Cendyne 40x/12x/40x drive for $29 (after rebates.) But, I encourage you to look right past the Cendyne, spend $20 more and get yourself a *real* CD burner. After all, if you can't run with the big dogs, then why not just stay on the porch? :D :D :D

Enjoy! And, happy purchasing!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My take? Spend $20 more and get a much better, newer and more capable drive that is definately a Lite-On drive. Even the cheapest Lite-On 52x/24x/52x sells for $67 + shipping from a Price Watch vendor. This drive will be that drive with a little firmware flash-aroo. Again, happy purchasing!! :) :) :)

Just got mine today...it's a Model CW 4001.

I believe this is made by Accesstek / Optorite. Accesstek CW4001

Anyone else get this drive? Is this any good or should I exchange it for one of the Lite Ons?

Thanks!

Why is everyone passing the Memorex (Lite-On) 48x up for $20 more? It's a much, much better drive.

got myself a verbatim, anyone got step to step directions to flash it to a lite-on?

I have OC'ed two 40x Verbatim to 48x Lite-on. I also OC'ed one 32x Verbatim to 40x Lite-on. All these drives support Mt. Rainier and run very well. Your drive can be OC'ed to 48x easily. Check out the Lite-on forum on club.cdfreaks.com. You will find the step-to-step guide for OC'ing your drive to 48x Lite-on.

Check the lite-on forum on club.cdfreaks.com. There is a statement about Memorex drive in the FAQ: "Memorex, all drives from Twelve1040 MAXX and up is Lite-On"

It is also possible to OC 24x Lite-on to 40x Lite-on (firmware XSUx). Check the model of your drive and read those posts on the Lite-on forum. If the model is 24102B (firmware 5Sxx), you can't OC it to 32x or 40x Lite-on. If the model is 24103S (firmware XBxx), you can OC it to a 32x Lite-on or 40x Lite-on. For 32x Lite-on model 32123S (firmware XSxx not XSUx), the drive can be OC'ed to 40x Lite-on. At present, the only firmware availble for OC'ing 32x to 40x is not official. However, it works. 32x Lite-on model 32125W (firmware WBxx) can be OC'ed to 40x and 48x Lite-on. 40x Lite-on model 40125S with firmware XSUx can't not be OC'ed to 48x at present. Both 40125S (firmware ZSxx) and 40125W (firmware WSxx)can be OC'ed to 48x.

First let me say, great site! Now I guess I'm missing something because I can't find that $10 off $50 Staples coupon. Thanks for any help!

Never mind. I found it!

I bought the 40x12x48 and it is not a Lite-ON unit. It's Accesstek or Optirite (still trying to figure it out).
I do have to say, however, that this drive is really nice. It's not too loud, it does indeed burn 40x at outer zones, it burns 32x on my 16x media with no problems. Burn-PROOF is built-in and works (it may be JustLINK or some other thing, NERO thinks its BurnPROOF however).
It copied all my SafeDISC protected CDs with CloneCD. Ghost Recon, Disney games, you name em. And yes I have the originals. But the disney games for the kid.. I'm glad to now be able to back them up.
I don't know.. LiteON isn't the only good thing out there. I bought my wife a LiteON DVD drive and I hate it, it's obnoxiously loud. My OEM Pine Technologu drive (an Artec GH-40) is so much quieter and just as fast... I would hate to have the LiteON instead.

Well, those are my 2 cents.

Actually, the new Lite-Ons are not very noisy at all. It seems there was a period of time about a year back, or a little more, where quite a few drive manufacturers were making drives that were quite loud - I've owned plenty of them. My 48x/24/48x Lite-On is a quiet drive. The advantage of going with a Lite-On based drive is the good potential for future firmware updates. With Lite-On, you can usually count on future releases of firmware that will provide some additional advantage for your drive purchase. However, given the results of your mini review, it does sound like there's another good drive manufacturer out there which allows you to get around the SafeDisk issues - for making backups of your current titles. If I were you, I'd put the orignal discs away and let you children play with the backup versions. Knowing children, the CDs tend to get scratched and finger-printed pretty quickly. :)

I just got home from the B&M with one of these in my hot little hands. Sure I paid $10 more but I have it now, in fact my Antec case is already cracked open, ready for surgery. The model number on mine is a LTR (Lite-On) number but the sticker on the drive itself reads "Cendyne". The model number on the sticker is also the LTR number though. Comparing this sticker with the one shown in the linked review from above, the stickers are identical except for this name. (The one shown reads "Lite-On".) The review was of a drive made in February of 2002 whereas mine was made May 2002. I guess they changed the stickers since then.

Thanks for the hot deal. By the way, what the heck is "Mt. Rainier" support?

Thanks for the deal, I got one ordered from Staple's website earlier this week......decided to go to CC today, and had the Staple's ad with me......had CC PM to staples price after rebate, my total after tax came out to be exactly $27(8.25% tax)......which is pretty good, considering the price of the drive from Staples is like $54 after tax, and I have to do the MIR and wait for it.....so for three dollars more, I think it's worth it....
