One of the most frustrating things is when an overweight or obese coworker or someone I'm talking to says "Oh, you're skinny and it's just easy for you".

No it's not easy. I get up at 4:15 in the morning to run. I get up when it's 20 degrees outside to run. I get up on a Saturday at 4:30am to get in a 12 mile run before my kids get up. I'm sore. I'm tired. I don't have time to sit around and binge on as many Netflix shows as I'd like since I go to bed at 9:30 most nights. None of that is easy.

It takes work and effort to want to be healthy. Most people just either don't care, are so far gone they don't want to try any more, or give up when results aren't immediate.

As far as BMI goes...if you are used to living in a "healthy" major city...AKA many of the coastal bigger cities your perception of the health of the US is skewed. Yes there may be some very fit people walking around those cities that are technically overweight/obese. Come to the midsection of the US and you'll understand. These people are not gym rats. They are just fat. And that's what BMI is intended for. It's a basic statistic that feeds into other risk scales. More mass = more stuff to push blood through = more stress on your heart and more chances for stuff to get stuck there. It's all a risk factor.

I was going to post something similar. Unhealthy food is made with so much salt and sugar and fat that it tastes really freaking good, and being able to replicate that at home takes a lot of work.

I agree with the rest of your post, but I wish we could avoid platitudes like this that distract from the real goal, which is to educate people how to live a healthy lifestyle. And that can be done eating at home or in a restaurant.

It takes no effort whatsoever to cook unhealthy meals at home. -- the wife and I do quite often in fact. A bowl of pasta with heavy-cream based sauce? How about fried eggs with bacon and croissants? 15 minutes to prepare and loads of fat and salt in the process. I've got 18 oz T-bones thawing on the counter as we speak for dinner tonight.
