$4 premium not from concentrate orange juice turns out to be fake

People shouldn't drink juice anyway... lots of sugar. At least eat the orange and you get more vitamins and more fiber.

New old wives' tale. You don't get the fiber, but you do get all the same nutrients as from an orange, and the same amount of sugar as consuming the amount of oranges it takes to make the amount of juice you drink. This is just like that anti-carb fad that has been around for the last decade. Pure garbage. Avoid the fads, my friend.

fresh squeezed >>> boxes saying 'not from concentrate'

all the juices i've ever had that said 'not from concentrate' have an off flavor and seem 2x as sweet as freshly squeezed

but it's not a big deal - they're just taking old juice and adding processed orange bits, still 'not from concentrate'

This is what I was thinking. I don't recall any advertising about the juice being "fresh". The only advertising that comes close is that one about "straight from the orange grove to your grocer's refrigerator." That is somewhat misleading. As long as it is pure juice and tastes good and does not undergo any harmful procedures that ruin the nutritional value or make it harmful somehow, then I am ok with it. Of course, it is hard to know if they don't do something to the juice to make it harmful to consume... I don't trust the FDA much, but what can you do other than grow your own?

Yes, surely this horrible scandal will be the one to finally convince the sheeple to rise up and overthrow the plutocracy.

Yeah but a normal person isn't going to eat 4 oranges a side dish with their breakfast. Juice is very calorie dense and most people don't realize it.

You just proved him right.

One cup of oranges does not equal one cup of juice.

Unless you found some magical orange that is all juice that is and if so where can we buy them? 😛

As for the fiber get them with pulp. 😉

How can 1 cup not equal 1 cup? 😵

A orange takes some time to eat. You peel it, you pull it apart, you chew it, and your stomach is more satisfied because of the fiber. When you have a glass of juice, you can drink it pretty fast, plus that glass of juice is a lot of oranges. People typically don't eat 4 whole oranges at one time, just as people typically don't drink raw orange juice that hasn't had some of the pulp removed.

OMG! Better not eat strawberry jelly...it's been...OMG! PANIC! Processed!

We make the best strawberry jelly ever from my berries and guess what. WE PROCESS IT!

The big deal is they are sneaky about it.

Is it too much to ask they state it is from storage vats and "flavor packs" added just before shipped?

OMG SO SNEAKY:

http://www.tropicana.com/#/trop_grovetoglass/grovetoglass.swf?juice_365_days_a_year

Oranges have a limited growing season, and because consumers want our great-tasting juice all year round, some juice is then stored for future packaging in chilled tanks to preserve quality. These tanks protect the juice from oxygen and light and hold the liquid at optimal temperatures just about freezing to maintain the best nutrition and taste possible. We also use small quantities of high-quality orange juice from Brazil to supplement the Florida crop.

http://www.tropicana.com/#/trop_grovetoglass/grovetoglass.swf?perfect_blend

The oranges Tropicana uses for its juices have different ripening seasons - so some stored juice is blended with fresh juice and a bit of the natural oils found in the orange peel and in the juice are blended in to deliver the most consistent and best-tasting juice. Pulp may be blended in at this point, too, depending on the product. Our blend team and expert tasters manage the daily quality and regularly sample our juice to ensure consistent great taste.

Thank you for uncovering this most horrendous Republican conspiracy. :colbert:

If you want fiber, skip the citrus fruits. They got diddly-squat.
Go for the apples. Loads of fiber and vitamins too.

Nope, comparing the two, they have the same amount of fiber, but oranges are more nutrient dense:

Oranges, raw, all commercial varieties
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1966/2
100 grams:
Dietary Fiber = 2.4g
Protein = 1g
Vitamin C = 53.2mg
Thiamin = 0.1mg
Folate = 30mcg
Calcium = 40mg
Potassium = 181mg
Omega3 = 7mg

Apples, raw, with skin

100 grams:
Dietary Fiber = 2.4g
Protein = 0.3g
Vitamin C = 4.6mg
Thiamin = <0.1mg
Folate = 3.0mcg
Calcium = 6.0mg
Potassium = 107mg
Omega3 = 9mg

i love apples but the last few times i got them they looked great at the store, no bruises, not soft, looked and felt like the perfect apples.

get home and take a bite and its like semi apple sauce (yes thats an exaggeration) . blehhhh.

soft apples are a sin in my book and apples are not on my list right now to buy.

1 cup does not equal 1 cup BECAUSE...

1 cup of orange is 1 medium size orange...
1 cup of orange juice is 2-3 oranges worth of juice...

so obviously there is going to be more sugar in orange juice... theres more oranges in it.

no-one is disputing that unprocessed fruit is better for you than juice...
but 1 cup of orange does not produce 1 cup of juice.

Not getting the fiber is a HUGE distinction.
Fiber takes energy to digest, so you offset a chunk of the energy absorbed from sugar. Fiber is filling, so you eat less of other stuff, and gain less weight. Fiber slows down the absorption of carbs, so you don't get a sugar rush followed by crash that makes you crave more sugar. You get sustained steady energy as fiber breaks down allowing for more sugars to be released.
If there is one fad to avoid, it's juices. Humans are designed to eat fruits and veggies, not have them stripped and refined into sugar water.

Did you guys also believe the commercial where the lady is reaching into the cooler for orange juice and a farmer on the other side hands her a fresh carton? It is called advertising and hyperbole. I never believed it went straight from the grove to my table. What about squeezing? Packaging? QC? Duh.

Not from concentrate means that you are not adding your own water and reconstituting the product. That is all it means. Anyone that thinks not from concentrate = fresh is an idiot.

Update

Rich California woman has hired a lawyer to sue on this:

1-11-2012

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/whats-oj-tropicana-sued-135956848.html

What's in that OJ? Tropicana is sued

A California woman is suing the maker of Tropicana claiming it is squeezing consumers by touting the best-selling U.S. orange juice as "100% pure and natural" when it is not.

In her federal lawsuit, plaintiff Angelena Lewis said Tropicana Products Inc, knowing consumers "want and demand natural products," deceives them in its advertising and packaging for its Pure Premium juice, including cartons featuring an orange with a straw stuck into it.

Lewis said the unit of PepsiCo Inc actually puts the juice through extensive processing, adding aromas and flavors that change its "essential nature" and give it a longer shelf life.

The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in Sacramento, California and alleges violations of U.S. consumer fraud laws.

It seeks class-action status on behalf of all U.S. purchasers of the juice, a halt to the alleged deception and compensatory, punitive and triple damages.

There's nothing wrong with orange juice. Unrefined sugar like that in orange juice is better for your weight than all the highly processed sugars found in the middle section of the
supermarket.

Eating as much as you can from the perimeter of the supermarket (fresh fruit/veggies, dairy, fresh meat/poultry/fish, frozen produce) is what we used to do before America got fat. We also were a lot more physically active, but eliminating one big part of the equation (processed food) is better than nothing.

I am not going to stand for this. This is OUTRAGEOUS! Dave you and me are heading to DC immediately to protest! It's time we stand up and fight for our rights as Americans! They can't take our dignity and freedoms away from us any longer! This is a scandal and the whole world needs to hear about it!

I'll meet you there tomorrow! Don't be late.
