A little perspective, the Xbox 360 gives a pretty good gaming experience, runs games on my HDTV at 720p and 1080i, no lag ingame, maybe a little with online play due to networking problems. It is able to output decent video, sound, vibration through the controller, etc with 512 MB RAM. No OS overhead which is why it can do it on 512 MB, whereas a desktop needs >512 MB because of the OS. But a desktop will give a very good gaming experience using 2 GB RAM plus whatever video RAM is on your video card. My point is that for gaming 2 GB or less is all that is needed for games. Maybe this is comparing apples to oranges, but game developers are not going to overbuild and cut out the 99.9999999% of their customers who run 1 GB or less on their PC's.

Well, I also have LCDstudio, Daemon Tools, Logitech Mouseware, G15 profiler, Teamspeak, Ventrillo, Winamp, SageTV and Nostromo Profile Manager.

Ya know... stuff that a "gamer" uses.

I can't believe I am using this same "gaming computer" for things such as a PVR, video editor, MM station, network mp3 host (for roomies)! Oh my, I must be a tard. Why would anyone want 4GB of RAM again?

So you lied earlier:

So please, enlighten us on why 4GB of memory will allow you to play a game with 0 virtual memory and eliminate HD thrashing, while 2GB will not.

Running with no virutal memory.

Go ahead and say what you will, crapping and all.

In a practical high-end computing environment (even if it is STRICLY for gaming), having enough RAM to not need a swap file is good.

Furthermore, if you have enough money to make a high-end rig and just want to use it for gaming and NOTHING else, then you are either full of ****** or have enough money for 4GB just for the hell of it.

Sitting idle, with nothing open but firefox, I am consuming 34% of my RAM.

So tell me, how is two gigs better than four? Having a ~5% performance decrease in RAM performance from running at 2T vs. 1T is quite worth it when you have no swap file to hit your bus performance.

I'll never understand why some of you posters wear your hearts on your sleeves and get offended and start to snivel when engaged in an online debate about PC performance. Toughen up a bit there, pal. Try debating with points, logic, and wit, instead of whining.

Technically, the one "crapping" here is you, as this thread is about whether or not 4GB is a waste for standard PC gaming. Again, try reading the OP's question. When you start talking about using your PC for other purposes, you've exceeded the bounds of the stated problem, therefore nullifying your response.

So again, I will ask you directly:

How is running with 0 Virtual Memory with 4GB (your scenario) any superior for gaming than running with 2GB, given the multitude of anecdotes in this thread that declare no single game to use more than 2GB of RAM?

Whoa. Whose whining?

I am simply saying that having a no swap file has a positive, indirect effect on performance.

And for those who do take gaming seriously and make videos of their clan, outfit in-game... recording with gamecam or fraps will be un-noticable with no swap file.

And technically, you have added nothing to the thread at hand. Except to "snivel", and "whine" about what I posted with your "Holier than thou" attitude. It is tiresome to see self-proclaimed know-it-alls bash down on others in the community for putting in their two cents (as dis-agreeable as it may be).

So to re-cap... You can't go wrong with 4GB of RAM, if you have the money.

You are. Check your previous posts in this thread. There are quite a few sarcastic "Wow I must be a retard" one-liners that come off as both immature and defensive.

I am simply saying that having a no swap file has a positive, indirect effect on performance.
Yet you still won't comment on why you think that even though you can run without swap with 4GB, you can't do it with 2GB. Address this, please.

And for those who do take gaming seriously and make videos of their clan, outfit in-game... recording with gamecam or fraps will be un-noticable with no swap file.
This is the first response you've made that even been close to being legitimately on-topic. Bravo! Now, do you have any reason to believe that 4GB + No Swap will give better performance than 2GB + No Swap? And more importantly, do you have anything to back up this belief?

And technically, you have added nothing to the thread at hand. Except to "snivel", and "whine" about what I posted with your "Holier than thou" attitude.
Yes, I have. I directly answered the OP's question - 4GB is a waste for gaming. Then I gave reasons why I believe others to be wrong when they made the opposite claim. How is that "adding nothing?"

It is tiresome to see self-proclaimed know-it-alls bash down on others in the community for putting in their two cents (as dis-agreeable as it may be).
The only one claiming to be a "know it all" is you, kind sir, as you insist your opinions on "pimping out" PCs are irrefutable and somehow above reproach. I assure you I've been wrong on many occassions, and totally clueless on countless others. There is no shame involved in being wrong, although I fear you to believe the converse. No one is being "bashed" for their 2-cents in this thread - only argued with when there is a difference in opinion and fact.

So to re-cap... You can't go wrong with 4GB of RAM, if you have the money.
Incorrect.

I am running 2GB currently and have yet to to get my peak commit charge above 1.5GB, and that is with heavy multitasking and playing memory hogging games.

Again, tiresome.

I am sure you have much to do then waste your critical time dissecting my worthless posts.

Sorry to bother you, sire.

For the record, you always have virtual memory. Windows is a virtual memory OS.

Why defend your stance with facts and logic when you can just take your ball and go home. Ahh, the easy way out.

Again, another user who has never seen peak memory usage surpass 1.5GB, much less 2GB. More reason to believe that 4GB is a total waste for gaming, not only in theory, but in practice as well.

Most people don't understand VM and what commit means, unfortunately (you do understand it.)

Any small benefit gained by 4GB will be negated by running in 2T. For games, I wouldn't be surprised by 4GB being WORSE than 2GB. Spend your money on something that will actually make a difference.

You're still at it? And are you still crapping?

Ok, let's see, you're not a whiner, not a bitch, not a bad person, ALWAYS looking to enlighten, never want to look like you are bigger than others.... no wonder I want the easy way out.

You are a saint! Who could possibly feel like they are talking to a wall to such an inviting and non-hostile person such as yourself?

Wait, I'll play some more using your superior forum tactics.....

"I know you are but what am I?"

Go cure cancer, genius.

Ok i'll play a little more.

I think a person who gets "pwnt" is the kind that is too stupid to decide between an end-of the line over-rated processor and an overpriced opteron.

Like this guy

Don't throw out the "pwnt" if you self-pwn yourself moments ago.

Question, when have you ever maxed out your RAM?

In life and in love, I've found that more than two of anything is usually a waste, and, sometimes, a PITA. ;)

Next?

BTW, I'm getting 2.8GB peak commit charge with UE3 in a 32-bit enviroment right now... So I'll go with the '4GB not useful for gamers' stance because no one here is going to be having 32 player matches with a 2560x1600 screen.
