Toyota are wasting their time with stupid-ass US emissions requirements and the lack of popularity diesel has in the US. Diesel engines are more efficient and more reliable than gasoline by far. Ever notice how there are a lot more diesel options in Europe than here?

A small (2.0L or less) turbo-diesel can easily break 200hp and 200lb.ft.

Haven't been in a d-cab truck lately huh?

I'll also take the truck in an accident any day.

As for the van thing - exactly.

The new full-size trucks are all pretty awesomely roomy. Titan, F-series, Silverado, Ram, Tundra, they are all massive and comfortable inside. F-Series is probably my favorite of the bunch, just a good balance of everything.

Minivan >>>>>>>>>>>>>> SUV for family practicality though, unless you live on a ranch or something.

*usually* a class-leading minivan will offer these vs. an SUV :

better fuel economy
better crash safety + lower rollover danger
lower maintenance costs
better handling
better braking
more interior space
more convenient doors + lower floor area (easier to get tall things in + don't have to lift them up as far)
more configurable interior (captain's chairs, cool consoles/entertainment centers)

All at the expense of a little image points for some people. I've gotten to the point where I couldn't possibly give half a shit what anyone else thinks of what I drive. I have a son going on 3, I'll probably get a MV as a DD before long, and get a fun little used car (S2K / Miata / Vette / whatever) as a weekender.

I still don't see it. I drive a car for every day use, and I drive a truck when I have something that won't fit in the trunk.

Way I see it transporting people = car, transporting people and stuff = truck, transporting a fuck-ton of people = van.

SUVs really serve no purpose beyond aesthetics and oil company profits in my mind...and most of them are ugly and ponderous as hell. No wonder they've sold so well.

Well for some people,(me included) they have to pick one vehicle to do everything, not this multiple vehicle approach your wallet seems to afford.

A suv fits this niche better than anything else.

A multi-vehicle system is ideal, but if you HAVE to pick one, the ultimate vehicle is a double cab mid-sized truck.

More cargo and towing capacity than an SUV, seats 5 comfortably, better-than-SUV gas economy (lower curb weight). Lower cost too. About the only advantages the SUVs have is a slightly more comfortable ride and perhaps a doo-dad here and there.

Basically, it comes down to "what are you going to do the most". But I haven't run into a situation yet where, regardless of the priority combination, there wasn't a better option than an SUV.

The only time that doesn't occur is when the #1, damn the torpedos priority is "want an SUV".

They're not bad vehicles, but something out there does better at each application.

What about hauling people with things that need to be dry? Now you're looking a pickup turned SUV. heck the entire shell market for pickups are for the buyers who should have gotten an SUV as well..

As for me, I like the SUV's flexibility. I can haul 4/5 with cargo, or 8/9 with smaller cargo. I can tow a trailer just almost as large as the equivalent pickup. I can have fewer people and still haul plywood sheets. And I don't have to work as hard as parking as those who have parked a 2008 F250 crew cab 8' bed should know that it takes two parking places, and it takes a foot ball field to turn it around. And don't even get started on the dually trucks.

Tonneau, shell, or tarp.

What you lose with an SUV is the ability to remove the cap for larger items. I'd like to see you transport a california king bed with any SUV.

They're flexible, yes, but I would still argue that in general terms, trucks are moreso.

But, long as you like it, that's the main thing. It's your vehicle after all.

Pickups aren't the right item for those either, a high cube trailer is. I see way too many of them fly out even with the proper security measures, not to mention the mattress shouldn't be exposed to outdoor allergens in that manner for those that are sensitive with allergies. Of course there's always rain to worry about as well.

Tonneau's can't haul a king bed because they won't fold completely out of the way. Shell's aren't just easy on and off pieces, they take alot of work and time to convert your truck back and forth. And tarps are ugly as hell but hey if they work they work :p.

But yes I'm very pleased with the 04 Expedition. :D

i'd be OK with that 4-cyl if it happened to be burning diesel instead of gas. i think it's about time we put some small turbo diesels into SUV's and light trucks.

If it comes flying out, the security measures weren't proper by default. Jesus fucking christ, I've NEVER had anything come flying out of my pickup.

Allergies are a sign of weakness, and the weak need to die off and not breed anyway.

Better go take your bi-polar pills there, you might feel a bit better.

As to the allergy remark there hitler, for you to be such a bi-polar twit what's your excuse for living right now? Please do yourself the favor, and to the favor of future generations, kill yourself now. Don't worry, we'll wait for your mood to shift again to suicidal.

If it takes you 5 minutes you have one cheap ass shell. If i'm going to have a shell on my truck, it's going to look nice, be well sealed to the truck bed, have running/brake lights, ect. Not to mention seeing as I don't live with a buddy to take it off, don't have sace just laying around to leave a shell when I need it off, and have no neighbor in a 6 mile radius, no I can't just grab a buddy you twit.

Might wanna jump off the failboat and drown while you can.

What kind of POS shell do you have on your truck?

I don't have a shell on my truck. I hate them, think they look horrible.

Have friends that have them...fiberglass shell is what, 200 to 300lbs? That's not that hard to secure in place with two or three able bodied human beings. Done it many times.

I've done it too, but if you think you can get it installed properly in 5 minutes, you're nuts.

Maybe if you use power tools for your clamps...and have everything lined up & weatherstripped already, and don't have to mess with any wiring..

Maybe he's thinking of those POS shells that are just held on with C clamps, no sealing, and no lights?

Exactly.

Why the hell would you install anything more? It's a truck bed, not a luxury suite.

People who buy trucks and don't use them as trucks are silly.

Wiring? Weatherstripping? Seriously guys?

Maybe when you're storing tools inside it's nice to have inside and side bay lights? Maybe towing large loads it's good for the extra clearance lights? If I'm dry storing goods in there (the reason for the shell in the first place) I don't want a leaking unsealed cap?

Seriously man.

Properly seated and clamped cap isn't going to leak in anything other than submersion.

Edited note: One of my more inventive buds just gorilla glued some custom cut silicone strips onto the edges of the bed. Once the cap is clamped on, instant weatherproofing.

Tools belong in a toolbox.

It rains plenty and snows rarely, but we're getting off topic, which is:

1) SUVs are a poor substitute compared to other options

AND

2) Caps/coverage on truck beds are stupid.

Now let's get back on topic please?

I have never owned an SUV. Well, except for a Bronco II that I sold before I even registered it.

I prefer having a cap on my truck during the winter because a truck bed is not much good when it's filled with snow and ice, and I really don't feel like shoveling the bed out every couple of days.

Just because you have no use for it doesn't mean no one else does, k?

How much snow do you get, anyway?

I'm in kindergarten for stating a preference?

Listen, I know the point of every thread on Anandtech is to try and act like as much of a know-it-all dick as possible, but this is pretty ridiculous.

Maybe you're a little miffed because I think SUVs are a bad idea. Sorry bout that, but life is life. You're not going to agree with everyone's opinion. Better get used to it.

I never said they didn't. I just stated my personal opinions, to recap:

- I see bed shells as ugly.
- If one must add a shell, I see little point in an expensive option with many questionable features.

Once again, if you have your ride set up the way you like it, then I'm happy for you. I reserve the right to prefer another configuration.

How much snow do you get, anyway?

Almost none. Just mostly rain. I noticed that after my original post. We get *weather* aplenty, but almost none of it is frozen.

You're in kindergarten for stating your preference as law and demeaning others that disagree with your preference.

"1) SUVs are a poor substitute compared to other options

2) Caps/coverage on truck beds are stupid."

That is what gives you the mentality of a 5 year old. You have been given plenty of reasons as to why SUV's easily lead a class of their own compared to pickups, and you insulted the ones that prefer covered storage.

So yes you're a kindergartner. Now go take your nap.

Well, that's more of a tit for tat situation. If you want to post ridiculous rants like:

In response to what are obviously jokes, then you're going to get some smartassery in return.

I ignored this post the first time around hoping you'd have enough inferential abilities to get the clue and mark it off as an oops, but apparently that was asking too much.

You have been given plenty of reasons as to why SUV's easily lead a class of their own compared to pickups, and you insulted the ones that prefer covered storage.

Yes, SUVs are much better at being SUVs than any other class of vehicle. That said, I can think of a better option vehicle for any application. We've been over this.

As for a covered pickup bed, yes, I think it's silly and will continue to do so. I don't see this as insulting someone, but I guess if you're that emotionally invested in your pickup's configuration it could be construed that way.

My main advice if that were the case would be to take a vacation from your vehicle for a little bit. The attachment is getting unhealthy.
