4 Arrested in Plot to Bomb New York City Temple...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The FBI arrested four men in New York City on Wednesday evening in an alleged plot to detonate a bomb outside a Jewish temple.

Officials told The Associated Press the arrests came after a long-running undercover operation that began in Newburgh, N.Y.

The names and charges were not immediately known, but authorities said the suspects had planned to detonate a car with plastic explosives outside a temple in the Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale.

The investigation had been under way for about a year.

FBI officials were expected to announce the arrests Wednesday night.

Rep. Peter King of New York, the senior Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, was briefed on the case following the arrests.

"This was a long, well-planned investigation, and it shows how real the threat is from homegrown terrorists," said King.

In June 2008, the informant met Cromitie in Newburgh and Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces, officials said.

Cromitie also expressed an interest in doing ''something to America,'' they said in the complaint.

From "something" to a car bomb and stinger missile? I really do wonder what this person would have done (if anything) without the helpful informant.

Not that I'm excusing these people, just because they may have been led by the nose. They deserve jail time for what they planned to do even if they'd never have come up with the plan without the FBI's help.

My point is that the threat of this kind of terrorism is overblown if the only serious plots out there are ones the FBI helps to create to catch the susceptible.

The article states that the men were looking to buy explosives before the FBI knew anything about their plans. A friend told the FBI they were trying to get explosives, so the FBI gave it to them (fake ones) to see if they would actually go through with the plot, which they did.

This raises the difficult question: what should we do with these would-be terrorists while they await trial? And if they are convicted, what then? I assume that if it's too dangerous to move people at Guantanamo to the United States, it must be much too dangerous to allow these jihadists to run loose in our prisons. After all, they might provide financing for other jihadists from their supermax cells, or radicalize other prisoners, or use special Terrorist Mind Control Techniques to create a whole army of brainwashed convicts under their complete control. No, what is loony is thinking we can win this "war on terror" by listening in on phone calls and torturing people we capture overseas. This is yet another case of government fighting the symptoms rather than the disease. We need to fix our foreign policy.
