well.. the state is broke.. the money has to come from somewhere.

how much are you making (dollars+benefits)? how much productivity are you giving back to the state?

If you are making substantially less than what you are contributing/producing for the state, maybe consider a private sector job.

Yep...once again, California is going to try to balance the budget on the backs of the state employees and the poor of the state. It's getting so there's not much "fat" left to trim, and they're going to have to start making serious cuts to services and payroll.

I foresee major changes for the state workers over the next few years...increases in health care costs, increases in the amount employees pay into their pension plans, cuts to retirees' medical, etc.
Many of the jobs performed by California state employees pay for shit when compared to private sector jobs. Once you work your way up the ladder, they pay fairly decently, but entry level jobs barely pay enough to make ends meet.
When I was a business agent, I represented the Cal-Trans highway maintenance workers. I was shocked at how poorly those jobs paid...and they haven't gotten much better in the 12 years since I quit as BA.

You'll most likely like the 10 hour shifts with an extra day off. I work twelves and would not go back to working 8's. I couldn't imagine working five days a week. The extra time off completely makes up for the long days.

those of you who are doing 10 hour shifts, how did you adjust to such long hours.

its only 2 extra hours. really wasn't much adjustment for me. I work from home too so it makes it even easier.

my biggest beef is working 10:30 am to 9 pm. I wish i could start earlier and quit earlier. The whole day is pretty much shot.

I work Sun - Wed, so having off Thur, Fri, Sat is nice. Working Sun isn't too bad as I don't generally do much on Sundays anyway, but everyone else I know if off Sunday and works Thur and Friday.

I work for the Cali and they are going to move us to 9.5 hours a day for 4 days, plus a 5% pay cut. The worst thing is out of the 13 people in my unit only 2 of us have to do this, the rest are salary and will get a 5% pay cut too but they will be allowed to work 4/8 hours instead, so they will work 32 hours a week and I will have to work 38. 🙁

i miss working 4 10's. having what felt like 2 saturdays was great! but my days off were mon, tue, wed. which was even better because saturday and sunday were always gravy. i really only worked hard 2 days a week! 😀

Its pretty easy. Working 4x10s was the best schedule I had. Even better was when I worked Mon Tus Thurs Fri. That middle day off was awesome as no matter how tired, angry, etc I was I was never far from a day off. I'd do it again in a heartbeat

It makes plannig vacation time off easier too

Would love 4 10s, I'm doing 6 13s now.

Some of you people have some insane work schedules. What work do you do that requires 6 days of 13 hours?

I'm sure the pay is great, but good god, I could never do a schedule like that. I get completely burned out when my job requires overtime at 4x12, and those 3 days off are spent trying to recover from the work week.

That said, I also work a physically demanding job too.

Med student, so I'm actually hemorrhaging money. One day, though, in the far far future I may be doing just fine with hopefully less hours.

That's a score imo, you get an extra day off now.

I love my current job, it's shift work. There's no set schedule so it's kinda sporadic, but basically I can work 8 hours shifts or 12 hour shifts depending on the schedule. When I end up working 12 hour shifts I end up with lot of time off.

In a few days I'll be starting 12 hour nights for 4 days. Then I'll be off for 4 days. This week I'm working 8 hour shifts but I get Friday off. It gets really sporadic, it just depends on how the hours work out. We work 160 hours per 4 week period (equivalent to 40 hour weeks), so the way it's distributed depends on different factors like people needing specific days off etc.

I love it. I can and do end up working weekends sometimes, and even holidays, but it's a small sacrifice to consider all the time off I get in the middle of the week. I actually prefer time off in middle of the week as all places are open so I can actually get errands done.
