spending over 2-3 grand for me would be kinda painful. it just kills the overclocker in you to not get cheap parts and oc them to good parts🙁

I agree with just spending $2000 or so on a computer, buying something that will hold its value, and then selling it off.

go for fx53 instead of 3500+

replace 6800gt with 6800 ultra leadtek winfast

choose 20.1 LCD/12ms instead of 19in

2x1024 sticks memory

pair up the z680 with audigy2 zs

are we up to the price yet?

I don't think anyone caught it, because I don't think anyone clicked on the Corsair link. 😉

Any recommendations on a good mobo with AGP for the dual opterons ?

Step 1: expensive chair. I can never remember the name, but there are plastic chairs with plastic mesh for the seat and back...comfiness 2nd only to a Laz-E-Boy.
Step 2: Nice monitor.
Step 3: Profit!
Step 4: Decent PC.

I bought a Tyan K8 Thunder awhile back for my school it was a Dual mobo with AGP also ask Markfw900 hes got a Dual Operton rig with and AGP slot I think he runs a X800Pro too.

Here is a link to a Tyan Tiger K8W Looks like it has everything you need for a desktop setup though you could maybe get one of the other mobos they have with PCI-X so you can have a better performance if you go with a RAID5 setup.

Take a look through their site and look around at the other options they have. We actually bought the mobo from ZipZoomFly for about 400 bucks though. GL

I don't know to much about the mobo we got I only played with it for about a day or so I installed 64Bit windows on it but it was worthless cause Tyan had no drivers out yet as this was months ago and now it just sits downstairs in our Computer club lab with Server 2003 on it Twiddling its thumbs. When I get back to school I will load a up folding@home or something. Cause that thing needs to be doing something more intensive.. hehe

Doesn't living expenses count as academics? Hell, I'd spend no more than 2k on the computer and spend the rest on food and shiet. Sure beats working then trying to get to class on time.

dont get the z680, if you have so much money get the gigaworks 750 or the klipsch promedia ultra 5.1

Buy a "decent" system.. then with the rest of the money, buy expensive stuff that he can ebay off. win win!

I would say, get some Apple Powerbooks and sell them off on eBay, then spend 2-3k on the comp.

Uh, no thats a waste of money. I'd seriously consider waiting for the 1066Mhz FSB Intels to come out this october... They will dominate.

I dunno AMD64's are unhh 64Bit. THey also have 1600mhz HyperTransport Bus, thats faster than 1066, but agin i don't know much about the new Intel CHips.
