CPU- Athlon FX 53, socket 939 $828
MOBO- ASUS $152
RAM- Corsair get 2 of these, comming to $290
HD- Raptor $158
Video- I would replace 6800 GT with BFG 6800 ULTRA 😛
Audio- Audigy 2 ZS $90
Case- Antec Sonata $99
PSU- Antec $119
DVD drive- Nec DVD-ROM $30
DVD-RW- Plextor $140
Floppy- Nec $10

But personally if it was me... I would get 2 Desktops + 1 Laptop

Your friend could easily spend that money on an Apple system. He could get a dual 2.5GHz system with 2GB of DDR and a 21" Apple Studio Display (LCD). That ought to eat up all his $$$. 🙂

with that much money i would just buy a computer. I think there is a point where if you have the money you can buy a system better then you can build it. An optimized alienware or falcon would be awesome and they cost around 4-5 grand

A good point. Then tell him to wait for the Alienware dual video card setups. 🙂

you all is ca-razy

i'd get a sweet desktop like the dual opty's and a ginormous lcd... how much do 50 inchers cost? and equally ginormous speakers

or just get a really sweet desktop and an apple laptop and sell the laptop on ebay. stuped ebay people will probly pay more than it costs for an apple. then you get sweet computer plus $

Get some awesome Sennheiser closed headphones. Dorms/student households are noisy enuf.
I like the idea of getting a laptop on the side. All the grad students tote them around. I forget who makes the awesome gaming laptops.
Another GREAT way to burn cash is a projector, and it's great for movie night with your friends. Don't know how great for games.

I like this idea. Get a nice set of 5 speakers+subwoofer and a decent receiver (should wind up around 2500) and spend the rest on the computer, most focused on dual LCDs. Then you'll have a setup where you'll only have to upgrade the computing components.

or have your friend get you something on the side with the leftover mula. say...a 2001fp? or a 6800 ultra? i mean, hey, its free money! 🙂

Indeed this system has no bs and expensive displays to jack up the price.
The keyboard looks hot from logitech. But why did they have to seperate it into two pieces, number cruncher and the keyboard?

But spending 600 dollars on memory seems a little extreme though...

It's 2GB of quality memory with tight timings. If you need to, you can cut the memory price in half and just have 1GB. But I like having 2GBs. 😉

Spent half it on the computer, and half it on a monitor... like the 23" 16ms widescreen LCD by HP. Gaming at 1920x1200, can't get any better than that... and the monitor will easily outlast several computer upgrades.

Definitly 2 monitors, such as 2 19" LCDs. They can be justified as academic since it's a lot nicer working on 2 large monitors when you have 20 sources you're trying to refrence for a paper on there. Now if you want to do multi-monitor gaming, go for 3 so you have a center monitor.

Uh, no thats a waste of money. I'd seriously consider waiting for the 1066Mhz FSB Intels to come out this october... They will dominate.
