optimized? wha... do the light & flimsy cases make it more aerodynamic and so faster? 😛

I'd get the absolute fastest and so most expensive components. SneakyStuff's reply details these well - though personally with that kind of budget and use it or lose it rules, I'd go with a second LCD, 2gb ram, a 6800ultra instead of GT, more than one raptor (think RAID), and the 7.1 gigaworks over the Klipsch (I'm biased 😛). Also might look at a nice wireless kb/mouse and some Sennheiser headphones.

5-6k and 90% of these replies have said go with anFX-53????

what would you recommend?

haha, I would say something like:

Apple Dual G5 2.5GHZ
2GB PC3200 RAM
6800 Ultra
2 x 250GB Hard Drives
Bluetooth Module
Wireless Apple Keyboard and Mouse
SuperDrive
Logitech Z-2200 Speakers
23" Apple Cinema HD Display

But hey, whatever floats your boat...haha.

Hmm. So he has to spend all the money? Well how about 2-3 grand on computer of his choice and the rest on hot girls... I mean female computer consultants. Special dorm or house call by these ladies aren't cheap and you're going to need someone to setup and teach you how to use all that hardware and software. I sure they bill hourly and can get you the necessary receipts.

I was under the impression many games don't work on Apples...? Is there some kind of winex available for them like there is for Linux? I also like the idea of one strong processor because most games don't support SMP.

can you be more specific concerning the scholarship? what constitutes "academic?"

personally, i'd try to buy something "academic" that will hold its value and then sell it. perhaps a dual g5 with cinema display, sell it, and pocket the money.

Most games that come to Mac are SMP aware, since the OS definitely benefits from multiple processors. There is no way to get PC games to work on the Mac, except for maybe a few exceptions, but there is beginning to be a bigger catalog available since the G5 performs better with games than the G4 did, and faster video cards are being made available for the PowerMacs.

An inexpensive Dell.

- need some software too -

Mathematica 5 suite (with application packages and independent products).
Full Photoshop package (and other appropriate Adobe software).
MS Office.

This could get expensive very fast!

Dually Opteron 248's 2-4gbs ram and 2-3 Raptor 74gbs in RAID0.

And def a geForce6800 of sum kind.

And a DualLayer DVD BUrner 20 or 23" Apple Cinema Display

and some other really cool stuff

Wow, playing around with those Mach L computers is fun... I got up to $39,505.99, and that was on the pathetic Mach L 3.8...

Just imagine what I could do with a Mach L Quattro 64 system :Q

If you have to spend that much, ONLY buy what he needs for a computer (spend 1-2k) and blow the rest on a ridiculous display.

you can resell the display for almost what you paid for it, and get cash. if you resell computer parts, you'll get half.

i read about those... and they sound sweet :Q

Since this is a college system, I say go with a laptop (take to class, home on weekends, etc...) and a desktop (sick of class -- time to pawn/frag). SO the laptop should be super thin and light. The desktop should be a decent gaming box. for around $1500-2000. Then get 2 displays: 1)Kick ass gaming LCD 2) BIG LCDTV to use as his TV and 2nd display for big spreadsheets, etc... OR as others have said one giant 40" monster. Then he can always sell off any of the pieces and still have all he needs for college (you know the class part).
