The USB cable that came with my iPhone is nearly impossible to get into/out of my iPhone. It doesn't have the usual side release buttons so I have to pull on the narrow part of the cable to get it out. All of my other iPod USB cables have a much "smoother" connection. Is this normal? Is it ok to use a regular iPod cable?

I would take that back and see if you can't get a different one. They should have release buttons on the side.

Ugh. How could they not put A2DP on it?? I need to get a new cell phone plan, and was really tempted to get the new iphone. As for picture messaging and all that, is there any word on whether they are planning a software update to add those features?

No word on whether Apple is ever going to add the MMS capability (or A2DP for that matter) to the iPhone. 3rd party developers may come up with some type of solution, but they probably wont work as well as the ones Apple would write.

The USB cable I got with my 1G iPhone has a dock connector that is much smaller (I'd say 1/2 to 1/3 the height) than the previous cable I got for my ipod nano. It does not have the side buttons to extract, I just wiggle it from wide to side to get it out. It is possible to use another USB cable (not firewire) to charge it just fine.

Not sure about YM but you can use the web version of GT on the iphone (not as an App though)

Alright, final question (at least for a day) I promise... 🙂

Has anyone tried using the supplied headphone/mic? Does the 3.5mm connector sit flush with the phone or does it stick out a bit? If I look at the connector from the back of the phone I can see a tiny bit of the mic white pole.

Also, the headphone jack is really hard to get the connector in and out of... Is this normal?

When I look at it from the rear of the phone, I can see a bit of the 'pole'. And yes, it is quite difficult to insert and remove the connector for me as well.

Wow, I figured that if I waited until later in the week I'd be able to go grab a phone without too much wait, but there was STILL a huge line and most of the stores around me are out of stock. I wonder if they'll get more in this week.. I think it's still the activation that is causing this though.. 🙁

The lines are treacherous around here as well🙁

I hope they do get some in this week, I want to return mine for a 16GB. It's not the activation causing it though. When I had mine activated Monday, it took less than 5 minutes.

Good luck with that. Lines were about 3hrs long today around here.

It really does seem more and more likely that the 3G reception problems are caused by the iPhone, and not AT&T. Over on the Apple Forums, people from other countries are complaining about low signal strength issues similar in nature to the ones here. I don't know if it's a bad batch of phones, the current firmware, or what, but it's pretty damn annoying that's for sure.

I think i'm going to wait a few months til the early adopter problems get out of the way. I already have iPhone v1 and while 3g might be interesting, my work sends me to travel to places where 3g might not always be available. That and battery life is a killer.

If they continue with the 1 year cycles though, I might just skip this gen and go with the next.

Well I just realized what A-GPS is, and that sucks. Having non verbal GPS in a car makes things a little more difficult. Even so, if TomTom(or whoever) does come out with a verbal GPS, will that be an extra charge?

I was looking at other phones that have full GPS already (Blackberry Curve), and it looks like there is a $9.99 fee for AT&T Navigator service. All combined, it's $100 a month for a damn phone regardless of which one it is.

tomtom likely will have an extra charge, but it should be worth it. it should be a cut above AT&T Navigator or whatever. having tomtom navigation and the tele atlas maps are the biggest cause for excitement, not just the concept of having GPS on the iphone.

And this will be possible on the 3g iPhone's hardware, and it's only a software issue? So they won't be releasing a new hardware set in 6 months that allows for full GPS? I just don't want to grab one now if they will require new hardware to get full GPS capability.
I don't see why there would be a hardware update. Apple is using A-GPS because it's superior, not because it's somehow inferior. A-GPS is full GPS.

Depends on the type of implementation used by apple:

Some A-GPS solutions require an active connection to a cell phone (or other data) network to function, in others[2][3] it simply makes positioning faster and more accurate, but is not required.

All reports so far suggest it is the former, not the latter.

If you don't mind me asking, what store is closest to you?

I'm in Orlando, FL, and they lines haven't been awful.. but the activation was taking so long that I would have to take a day off work to get one, which isn't worth it to me. And now they're out of stock.. so we'll see when I'll actually be able to get one.

Wow.. just crazy.

I was so naive, thinking that I'd just be able to go in after the opening weekend and grab one. Hah! 😀 Oh well.. I don't mind waiting, so that I don't have to wait in line.

No real line at my local Apple store. I could of had a 16GB, but the damn at&t guy didn't tell me I couldn't get a phone at the discounted price for a few days, once I returned my phone. I'm so pissed right now, I almost want to quit at&t.

Wow it looks like there are some pretty big issues with the 3G reception which may be caused by the iPhone. I see posts by people having the same issues in different countries like Hong Kong which has excellent 3G coverage. Hopefully it's something that can be addressed with a software update.

It is definitely the phone, which is why I returned mine. I have excellent 3G coverage at home, and not bad at work. I thought at&t might be having network issues, but my 2 pals at work had no problems with 3G. When I was having problems getting service on edge, it had to go.

Got the 16gb white for the wife today through direct fulfillment. Not bad turnaround, ordered Tuesday and it came in today.

Will play with it tomorrow, hope we have better luck than others with complaints of battery life/3G issues/etc

Well, I've heard some criticisms of the Instant Messaging capabilities of the iPhone... what about using something like Meebo, or the web based GTalk?

It won't change the fact that you can't get IMs when the program is not open. As it stands AIM is a bit buggy, but the lack of IM capabilities when it's closed is the killer.
