Carlsberg ASA is marketing an upscale beer so expensive, at $398 a bottle, that it's reserved for those with a champagne budget.

The Danish brewer claims to make what is "probably the best beer in the world." The company on Tuesday said its new Vintage No. 1 beer is also probably the most expensive beer in the world.

Brewmaster Jens Eiken, of Carlsberg, told The Associated Press that only 600 of the eight-tenths-of-a-pint bottles will be made, and most will be sold through three of Copenhagen's most exclusive restaurants. The first 52 bottles were sold last week, he said.

"We believe that there are people out there who are willing to part with this amount of money just so that they can taste an amazing beer or to keep it on their mantelpiece," said Eiken.

Eiken said part of the secret of the 10.5 percent alcohol beer is the way it's stored -- in special Swedish and French oak casks in a dimly-lit crypt 50 feet under the company's old brewery. The expert said the taste of the brew hints of prunes, caramel, vanilla, oak and cherry port bitterness, and was best consumed with gourmet blue cheese or on its own with "a very special friend."

Some Copenhagen residents, despite the Danish capital's high standard of living, expressed doubts that any beer would be worth that much.

"Only showoffs will buy this beer," said TV journalist Marie Grundtvig Buss. "There can't be any justification for such a price for a single bottle of beer."

Eiken insisted that even though Vintage No.1 costs about 400 times as much as a normal beer, its special ingredients make it "400 times tastier."

There is another incentive for those finding the beer's price a bit hard to swallow. Each bottle is labeled with a hand-stenciled original lithographic print by Danish artist Frans Kannike, making the empties worth $100 apiece, said Eiken.

The funny part is the geeks buying this.

The 'Stella' crowd, microbrews, and the like have made this a reality.

I thought this was expensive. It's got to be a great beer though, would love to have the scratch to spend on that.

I would think that this was made a reality more by the same forces responsible for a $55 bottle of water, not the microbrewers who commonly languish in obscurity and financial insecurity for the sake of producing great beer. If anything, I think the Stella crowd is rather the antithesis of the microbrew crowd. Just a thought.

Not sure of the legality of shipping beer, but if the post office is ok with it then I could probably pick up a case (assuming they allow two) for some ATOT'ers. Maybe I can meet some other Illinois guys and drive out there. I'll post more info when they announce the Dark Lord day.

I guess they are brewing 3 times more then last year.

$400 for a bottle of beer, HOLY SHIAT.
Based upon the description, It sounds a bit like Allagash Interlude to me.
http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/allagash-interlude/52853/

That said, I wonder how it would compare to some of my favorites. I don't think I'll be finding out though.

I can get monk beer here, and it's more than awesome enough times infinity plus one.

same people probably buy into that water. Going to many bars here in palm beach county will have you hearing 'this beer sucks', 'they have no Stella here', 'a microbrew is so much more full and flavorful'

It's like a bunch of whiny bitches than men.

Beer is supposed to be good....not go for gold medals and be the A student. it's supposed to be easy to drink and find.

If you want to be pretentious go for $500 shots of cognac.

If you like New Glarius beer, be sure to give the Spotted Cow a try. One of my favorites.

You want me to shell out $400 for something you aren't even willing to say is the best beer in the world? It's "probably" the best beer... it "might be" the most expensive... it's "possible" that it's worth it... Well, "maybe" you should blow it out your ass. I mean, hell, Budweiser has the audacity to market themselves as the best beer in the world, surely you're better than that, right? If you're actually trying to sell a bottle of beer, and a small bottle at that, for $400, you need to market your shit better than "probably the best." I need to believe that purchasing this beer will guarantee me a threeway with Jessica Alba and Beyonce on my 100 foot yacht en route to my new 15,000 sq. foot Tuscan villa. Simple marketing.

If you want to be pretentious go for $500 shots of cognac.

Beverages, just like foods, can have connoisseirs; people who appreciate the flavor enough to demand the best quality they can find. If you wanted, you could survive on ramen and Taco Bell... but wouldn't you rather have a nice filet mignon? Similarly, you can get drunk on Monarch vodka for 8 bucks a half gallon... but Grey Goose is going to be more pleasant to drink.

If you want to drink ice cold PBRs, that's your business, and good for you. But some of us like to taste our beer. We're not just drinking to quench our thirst or get drunk, we legitimately enjoy the taste of a nice, hearty porter. We want a stout so thick you can bend a spoon in it. We want an ESB that makes our face contort into impossible shapes, an IPA whose hoppiness cleaves our palate in twain, a trappist ale that melts in our mouths like the nectar of the Gods. We like beer, and we are willing to spend more to get something that's just a little bit better.

Maybe it's because I come from Oregon (a land so fanatical about beverages that if someone refers to themselves as a coffee drinker, and you hold out your hand to offer them Starbucks, you'll be pulling back a stump), but being a beer connoisseir just feels right to me. Life is too short for shitty beer. So bottoms up my beer drinking friends, whether ye' be toasting with a Rogue Dead Guy, a Stone Imperial Russian Stout, a Deschutes Abyss, a Rochefort 10, or even the old fall back, Widmer Hefeweizen. Salud.

I wonder if it's too early to start drinking at work?

This thing is pure marketing. The true beer connoisseurs will not be drinking this thing especially if more than 1-2 months go by...

Beer is a perishable food and does go bad with time.

This thing is the same as those Kobe beef burgers....what a waste.

Some beers can be , and do get aged. They develop more character with time
