I'm wondering what this card is, seeing as everyone keeps saying it's "faster than a GTX" and will apparently cost around $250. So far that's about all I've heard. It apparently comes out in 2 weeks.
So...why all the fuss about this card?

honestly if they had the card beating the gtx, they would have leaked some benches or something, the silence is like.... i dunno..... a bad sign

I hate to say it, because I hate to see a one-sided fight, but QFT. I mean if AMD has something killer on the way, now is the time to let that silent but deadly loose a little.
something stinks, or nothing stinks... depending on how you want to look at it.

ATI should have never been bought by AMD. They have killed off a one-time great video card company. Thanks AMD, for taking down another company besides yourselves.
I used to work across the street from compaq world HQ. I knew one of their vp's and asked him why they were selling out to HP. His response? They weren't going to make it on their own so they sold out to the highest bidder. Unfortunately for AMD, they WERE the highest bidder.Originally posted by: mruffin75

What!?!?!?!?
How is this AMD's fault?? The R600 (and plans for next generations) was well put in stone before AMD acquired ATI. If anything I would expect ATI to have gone under if it wasn't for AMD buying them out..
I could've seen ATI going the way of 3dfx... going bankrupt and selling off their IP to Nvidia..
Which would have been a shame because IMO ATI have better image quality all-round than Nvidia..

Maybe they are waiting for the "official" launch. This way when nvidia has its word out, ati can counter to the same potential buyers. IDK honestly, just a guess.

taltamir,
The enthusiast market is a drop in the bucket. AMD/ATI will make a shitload more money by providing major OEMs with cards that are good enough for the mainstream market for as cheap a price as possible. Also, a lot of people who make their own computer cannot afford the top-of-the-line flagship card of a generation but are quite happy to upgrade every two or three years for the second best performer at a reasonable price. I know that if ATI's offering in the next couple of months allows me to double the Oblivion performance of my 1900XTX (which was an aberration for me in terms of price - my previous 9500 Pro was more typical and was good enough for three years) for a couple of hundred dollars and run cooler, they'll get my money.
QFT. There is no reason whatsoever that AMD would not be shouting to the winds their performance advantage if they had one. The only reason they have to keep silent is that 8800gt is eating their lunch. I predicted a few weeks ago that one of these new cards would challenge the 8800gtx, I just predicted the WRONG one.Originally posted by: taltamir

nVidia waited for the official lunch for a reason... that reason being that having no compeditors they could keep selling the GTS, GTX and ultra at extreme prices... even now the GTS costs more then the GT despite performing worse simply because it hasn't been long enough for people to catch on.
So nvidia made a smart business decision to keep things a surprise, it made them more money.
AMD is gonna make LESS MONEY by being SILENT if their product outperformes the GTX and costs less... if they raised a big fuss how they are comming out with a better card for less money in the comming weeks NOBODY will be buying the GT... they will all be waiting for the AMD card instead... and since people upgrade usually once a year, and it has been a year since the last batch of cards, you are looking at nvidia selling to all the people who have been waiting anxiously for monthes to buy a new card... those will will soon run out and AMD will have much less buyers.
AMD can make MORE MOENY by being SILENT if their new card underperfoms the GTS, while costing only marginly less then GT.
If they announce it now , NOONE will wait for it. People like me who are currently waiting to see what AMD has to offer will go buy the GT because they will know there is no point in waiting (since nothing is comming). But if people who were waiting for AMD were kept in the dark, when it is finally released and they are disappointed they will be able to pick between AMD and nVidia, and then it is a 50%/50% as to which they will go with (since the underperfoming part is balanced with costing slightly less).
