What do you mean by download the image?

The 360 HD has their "operating system" that interface /menu etc. so since there is no way to get that I'd assume you need an image/copy of the 20gb drive. When my drive died I found someone who was upgrading to the 120 so I just bought their old 20gb and swapped it in.
I'm still not sure what you mean. If I have to buy a new 20GB HD, won't it have the "operating system" on it?

I bought just the HD for something like $20. I took apart and used my own/old casing HD cover thingy. MS charging what $99 for a 20gb is a joke.
Ok, I follow you now, but I don't think that's an option for me. I would need a working drive to copy, and I don't have one.

NOOOOOOOO!

Damnit, my 360 finally RRoDed on me, exactly one year after I first got it. Of course it happened right when I started to play Portal.

It looks like I have a 2-year Circuit City warranty, so maybe I'll see if I can't exchange it tomorrow before trying the refurb through MS route. Maybe I'll end up with a Zephyr/Falcon with HDMI, that would actually be pretty cool. I'm not sure what to do to save all my profile and save data from my HDD, though...

EDIT: The 'towel trick' worked, we'll see how long that lasts and then I'll try my luck at CC.

My 360 is shipping back soon. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. What's weird is my friends and I have had our 360s since launch....Since LAUNCH...and we haven't had any problems with any of them. Until now...we're having disc read errors. It doesn't recognize it's a game. It won't load. What is up with that? Two years after launch...and they are all breaking at the same time. Wow....Does anyone know if you can tell what kind of 360 is it from the Serial Number?

Well, I initiated the Microsoft repair/replace process through their website linked at the beginning of this thread. The Circuit City warranty requires that you send them all accessories and packaging, which means I'd have to send in my hard drive. Hopefully the MS process won't take too long and the replacement will not break. I just got LEGO Star Wars, COD4 and The Orange Box. :(

Question: If they send you a refurb unit under warranty repair, does the new unit also have a 1 year warranty? I'm asking because what if the new unit sent to me works fine, then the dvd drive goes bad in a few months? My old unit would already be out of warranty, except for the RRoD issue. Does that mean the new unit would also be out of warranty?

Woohoo, I got my unit back today! It's been just under 2 weeks since I sent it out on Jan 2nd, so not too bad. I looked at the Mfr date on this new one and it's 12/25/2007, so hopefully it's using the newer design. I'll fire it up later today and it's back to COD4 :D

Wow, hope that mean they're just giving up on the old design and just sending out new ones now. Our "coffin" got here this morning then got sent half-an-hour's drive away cause I was still in bed and Purolator needs you to sign:(.

Finally received my replacement so now I can play the games I got for Christmas! MFR Date of 06-22-2006, which, IIRC, means this one is probably also doomed to failure. If/when this replacement dies, I will definitely just buy a new Core so I don't have to go a month without Xbox. Or maybe I'll just buy a PS3 to tide me over if I don't have one already...
