After the towel trick failed after 2 days, I sent it back about 2 weeks ago and I was told that it was sent back to me today. I was not expecting this quick of a turnaround. Maybe they sent me a brand new 360!!

Crossing figure that it's a brand new one.

when you warranty your xbox they send you back another faulty refurbished xbox. I imagine they are just recycling rrod'd 360s. towel trick fits perfectly.

Agreed, up until the towel statement. Up until resently, what MS sent back was guaranteed to fail given enough temperature cycles, because MS had not yet fixed to root of the failures. Only time will till if the recent combination of changes ("redesigned" CPU, redesigned motherboard, redesigned thermal solution, discretes supplier changes, design-for-manufacturing changes, the list goes on) will eliminate the RROD problem. But since the GPU is still a major root failure issue, the chances that the RROD-related problems are totally eliminated is near zero. At least not until the NEXT major combination of revisions. But MS may screw that up as well. In 30 or 40 years, we are all going to kick back and laugh and laugh about how bad we had it in the late-2000s. Sucks to be us now, though.

One thing I expect to see changed before this time next year, via Live updates, is that the error codes with be changed in "firmware" (put in quotes for a reason), so that the RROD indication will no longer exist. FIXED! NO MORE RROD FAILURES! NO MORE FREE WARRANTY REPAIRS! Of course, there will be a different light/flash/beep indication system, but no more RROD.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that they can get away with this high of a failure rate. But for some crazy reason people are accepting this and continuing to buy Microsoft's boxes.

This problem will continue until they redo the motherboard the main problem, adding heatsinks and news chips aren't fixing anything its just delaying the problem.

Hmmm... Given the amount of people who are experiencing multiple failures it seems like it would make monetary sense to fix the dasmed things properly instead of recycling units that will eventually fail again.

I dropped my 360 off at the UPS store on October 1st and they shipped it back last Monday with a delivery date of tomorrow. Mine wasn't experiencing the RROD but a drive failure which made it impossible to read ANY game or DVD, "Please insert this disk into a Xbox 360"

Do you have to have proof of purchase in order for microsoft to fix your 360? I bought mine on the forums here and I don't have a receipt for it. Will microsoft still fix it if this happens to me? Or do I need to register it under my name or something?

No receipt needed. I lost mine long time ago and Best Buy stupid online system only keeps receipt for 12 months.

considering the Xbox360 has not even been available for 2 years yet, and the warranty for is for 3 years, it's safe to say that Microsoft knows you haven't had your Xbox360 for more than 3 years :)

So no, you don't need a receipt.

The warranty technically only covers the original purchaser.

Not totally true. I bought my 360 used about a year ago. It RROD'd and I called MS, they asked me questions, I told them I bought it used from AT, they asked me for the name, address, phone number of the person I bought it from, all info matched up and they transferred the warranty to me. Took about 4 weeks to get it back. This was before the warranty extension and before MS came out and said they are all defective so their policy may have changed since then.

Refurb it! Just because it works for a little while after it cooled off, just means the fractured solder joints currently are lining up and pressure contacting. When you get deep into a CPU & GPU intensive game, the chips will again expand at a different rate than the motherboard, and those damaged solder joints will again open circuit. RROD!

I suppose you could play nothing CPU or GPU intensive, like arcade classics, and hope for the best, but what would be the sense in that?

McAllen! We have a problem!

I just got mine back today. They gave me a replacement unit(don't know what that means) with a manufactured date of 09/03/2007. The turnaround after I shipped it was about 3 weeks. Probably would have been only 2 weeks if UPS didn't lose my package for a week.

My old one also was RROD, then worked for awhile, went dead again, etc.. No receipt was needed to return.

anyone remember the what you're supposed to do when you get the box. I warrantied one before but that was awhile ago.

I don't remember being asked to put the reference # on the outside of the box.

just taping it to the console itself.

Mine died once, I live up north (Canada) - phoned um... Friday or something, box got there next Thursday, dropped it of at FedEx on Friday, got the console back in working order two weeks later. Considering this was done at no cost to me and they even game me one month of XBL for free I do not complain..

Put the reference number in clear numbers on the BOX and on a piece of paper and tape the paper to the 360. Then seal the box with provided tape and stick the sticker they gave you onto it.

Mine came with the reference number on the box already. All I had to do was put the packing label on the box and put my 360 (minus the hard drive) in the box.

I had heard about this whole "reference number" thing before mine RROD'ed (when my first one did in 06 I don't remember a reference number at all).

But sinc eI did mine all online, I didn't get told a reference # ever. But I did notice when I got my box, there was a sticker that said "reference number" or something like that on the side, so I'm assuming it was that.
