I think comparing the launches would be more accurate since the Wii and PS3 are still in short supply.

Wii -1.1 million
PS3 - ~700,000
360 - ~600,000.

I don't think the 360 will have much gas after the Halo 3 release and the other 2 consoles become readily available.

Rumor has it that the Halo franchise and the Gears of War franchise will be releasing games "inter-yearly" - 1 Gears of War game 1 year, 1 Halo game the next year, repeat.

If that happens, I highly doubt your prediction will be available.

Not to mention, there are many other great games on the Xbox360.

Also, Metal Gear Solid may have a trilogy coming to Xbox360...

MS just announced like a month or so ago that they were making a profit on each console sold now, earlier than expected. That was part of the reason people were expecting a price drop or a upgraded 360.

yes, but they've lost 4B$ so far (there was a really long segment on VG consoles on discovery or cnn or something, can't remember... but to be fair, that was the money lost on the original xbox) 🙂 Not to say they couldn't... that's pocket change to gates for getting into the living room if IPTV and tv/movie downloads pay off.

They're actually making money on each 360 now after some manufacturing cost reduction

yes, i know. considering that's what I was replying to 😛 I was just stating the xbox line has a bit of a ways to go before turning profits... but like I said, doesn't matter if they can pull off the living room stampede

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20051228-5862.html

MS doesn't have to overcome the $4 billion in losses to turn a profit. Like I said in one of my earlier posts, they are bound to turn a profit in 07 on their XBox division.

that doesnt make sense. they lost $4B. how do they not have to overcome that to be overall profitable?!

Not only that, but the wii has been outselling the ps3 on ebay as well. Like 25,000 wii's have been sold compared to only 16,000 ps3's. To bad wii is still garbage.

Posting a profit/loss per quarter/year.

I'm intrigued by the Wii but I have to agree. It's all about the "retro" games on that console. Nostalgia only gets one so far before you fall flat on your face.

The first number is the number sold in December. The second number is the total number sold since the console was released.

XBox 360 surpassed 10 million...

Worldwide. These numbers are just for North America.

edit - on second glance, the second number might be for the year 2006.

Think it is domestic...just doesn't seem right that MS has only sold 4.5million 360's in the US since launch.

More than likely a bit more. Reason for this primarily is due to the fact that NPD only tracks about 60% or so of the US market from my understanding.

Oh? Like what?

Lost Planet
GRAW2
Alan Wake
BioShock
Crysis
Halo 3
Halo Wars
Virtua Fighter 5
Turok
Mass Effect
Half-Life 2 (with episode 1 and 2, team fortress 2 and portal included)
Assassin's Creed
Fable 2
Grand Theft Auto 4
Forza Motorsport 2

Plus many others.

Problem is that there's only 2 on that list that I care about in the least. Fable 2 and Lost Planet. They rest on that list don't even interest me at all. X-Box ALMOST had me, then I found out that PS3 is getting Ninja Gaiden so one of the big things pulling me to the x-box 360 is no longer a factor. And since I already own and x-box I don't care about backwards compatibility. I never owned a PS2, so getting a PS3 for backwards compatibility has a purpose. Though I'm tempted to get a Wii because I've owned every nintendo console that's come out so far and I'd hate to abandon an old friend.
GAAHHHHHH I need enough money so that I don't have to worry and can buy all three.

And the motion control games will get old quick too. Don't see myself buying one ever, and i've owned every major console since sega genesis.

Ninja Gaiden sucked on the original XBox, I don't think it's going to be a "better" game on the PS3. There's a difference b/t a difficult game and an almost impossible game. The latter just makes you throw the game against the wall...which most people felt after playing NG.

So don't get one?

While you may not like those games on that list, those are all quality titles that are going to be blockbuster hits.

Ditto...except I skipped the Genesis/SNES generation, my parents wouldn't let me buy one. 🙁 Been on board with every other gen, including Virtual Boy. God that thing was a piece...still have it in my closet though. 🙂

Dated yes. Hardly obsolete at this point as highly rated games are still being released for it.

Wonder how many of those sales from the $100 rebate from microcenter and the $100 GC from Toys R Us?

some of my co-workers who picked picked a 360 for their kids got premium units for $100 cheaper because of this..they did pay full price for accessories though..

Because there's no games worth playing on that console at all

I have a ps2 with a ton of games and yes, there are indeed a lot of great games that have been made for ps2 and some that are still being made. But as an investment, the $150 sunk into a ps2 + $ for some accesories is not worth it at this time in my opinion because of the relatively short useful time left in the console's life. How much longer are good games going to be coming out for that console? Maybe one more year? I've already seen the shelf space reserved for the ps2 substantially reduced in Best Buy.

I didn't find it to be that difficult of a game. I loved the gameplay and thought it was just right level of difficulty for what it was. It's just one of those things that nods me slightly towards the PS3.

Are all ~13,000 PSX and PS2 games previously released going to suddenly stop working at that time? 😛

A new PS2 (for the hardware warranty) and a crapload of second-hand games or Greatest Hits titles at massive discounts will get you way more entertainment per dollar than any of the three new consoles.

It still has plenty of useful time left. FFXII just came out for it, and anybody who gets it now has an expansive library for it. I'm an RPG junky, so there's plenty of games to still pick up for it that I haven't, like Suikoden V, Valkyrie Profile 2, etc.

You're kind of in denial. Only 1 or 2 of the new games look interesting. I guess if you really really love Halo and Halo-like games then yeah, the lineup is looking awesome.

Hey guys, the real problem is finding CONTROLLERS for the Wii. Seriously I get far more Wii's than controllers at my store. Especially Nunchuks.

QFT. I hate the @ssholes that try and sell the nunchuck and wiimote for 90 bucks on craigslist!

Anyways, I bought mine on the nintendo store

http://store.nintendo.com

Only 5 dollar shipping and I didnt have to pay any tax. Getting my controller on monday I think!

yeah can't beleive it had that many sales. wow.

The reason there are so many sold PS2's is because they break, everyone has to buy 2-4 of them over the PS2's lifespan.

I know one person that had a PS2 break, and that was a launch PS2 that broke 4 years later.

I've had my fat PS2 for 4 and a half years and it has never showed any signs of problems. I use it as my primary DVD player and regularly play games on it (Guitar Hero 2 > Guiter Hero).

Everyone else I know has a PS2 and it never broke. You're smoking crack.
