MS just announced like a month or so ago that they were making a profit on each console sold now, earlier than expected. That was part of the reason people were expecting a price drop or a upgraded 360.

yes, but they've lost 4B$ so far (there was a really long segment on VG consoles on discovery or cnn or something, can't remember... but to be fair, that was the money lost on the original xbox) 🙂 Not to say they couldn't... that's pocket change to gates for getting into the living room if IPTV and tv/movie downloads pay off.

1.4M ps2's were sold this past dec?

WTF?

It's at a great mass market price point ($130) and has a ton of games that can be had cheap.

The upside of this is that more people buying PS2s are likely to buy PS3 later on. The downside is that this clearly shows that the $500 and $600 entry points for the PS3 are absolutely killing PS3 sales as people would rather buy a last-gen machine cheap.

Sales numbers are meaningless (to determine popularity) until all consoles have the supply to meet the demand.

Last time I was in BB there were as many unsold PS3s as there were XBOX360s (unless there were more 360s back in inventory somewhere... kind of doubt it thought). Not a Wii in sight. 😛 I think we can make some safe assumptions about popularity.

They're actually making money on each 360 now after some manufacturing cost reduction

360 - rarely seen on shelves until March of '06.
Wii - Never seen on shelves since launch.
PS3 - Frequently have been seen on shelves in the last few weeks.

Yea, I wasn't able to buy a XBOX 360 till March myself(didn't want to buy bundled crap).

But you won't have any probably finding PS3 2 months after release.

hmmm... I sold my PS2 for $50 with 2 memory card. I didn't realize the PS2 was so popular, still...

Yeah, I've actually been thinking of picking up a PS2 to try out some of the games I missed out on - RPGs, Katamari, etc.

But then I think of how infrequently I play games now because of work, family, life and I think better of it. 🙂

I think comparing the launches would be more accurate since the Wii and PS3 are still in short supply.

Wii -1.1 million
PS3 - ~700,000
360 - ~600,000.

I don't think the 360 will have much gas after the Halo 3 release and the other 2 consoles become readily available.

comparing launch numbers is worthless, since they all sold out completely and experienced shortages on launch.

So you think it's more accurate to compare a console without any shortages with 2 consoles with shortages? How about you just admit the Wii sales are much more impressive than, 360 outsells Wii and PS3 in December.

I'd like to see Nintendo jump back on top. I thought the GC was a flop because of it's design and timing.

It's the only Nintendo console I don't own (also have a PSX and Xbox). Now that I have a Wii though, I'm gonna pick up all the GC games I loved or never got a chance to fall in love with. Picked up RE4 the day I got my Wii... going to get Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and possibly the Metroid Prime games and Paper Mario. I'd also get SSBM, but with Brawl on the way I'd rather wait because I'm sure Melee would just gather dust at that point. Mario Kart DD is also a potential buy, but I'd like to wait and see if Nintendo announces a Wii sequel.

the 360's been available for more than a year, and 1/4 of it's sales came in December ? That's weird.

there's nothing remarkable about it outselling the Wii and PS3, which in the case of the Wii could have sold 3-5 times more if that number was available.

the holiday period provides a significant boost to sales for all systems handhelds included for years.

you can see the jump in the figures from the very last table

I still haven't been able to find a Wii. 🙁

Bought the Wii last week at Wal-Mart. It just came surprisingly - we were going to go to a different Wal-Mart at 6:00AM on a certain day when the Wii was supposed to come in, but we went to a different one just to see if they had it, and they did.

Hey guys, the real problem is finding CONTROLLERS for the Wii. Seriously I get far more Wii's than controllers at my store. Especially Nunchuks.

Are you kidding? MS has one of if not the best line up of games coming out.

anything other than rehashed FPS and racing games?

it plays all the old games? little kids don't know the difference (and are likely to poke their eyes out with the stylus)

not to mention the real lack of interest in the PS3.

And the PS2 is a monster, it is seriously hurting PS3 sales.

yeah can't beleive it had that many sales. wow.

The reason there are so many sold PS2's is because they break, everyone has to buy 2-4 of them over the PS2's lifespan.
