County Spends $36 Million On Welfare For Illegals In May

Antonovich says the costs are creating a ?devastating impact? on the County. New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los AngelesCounty collected over $36 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in May 2008. These findings were announced by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits is going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $19 million in welfare assistance for May 2008 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations, for a projected annual cost of $432 million.

?Illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,? said Antonovich. ?With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $432 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year ? not including the millions of dollars for education.?
 
I never understood why illegals can get welfare. It seems like it would be so easy to prevent...just require valid ID and a SS number. That would easily stop 75% of illegals from getting welfare benefits.

Here in Illinois its REAL bad, friggen illegals get just about anything they want. I work for my county government, and our Health Department is always FILLED with illegals getting free/reduced birth control, shots, and other services. It really pisses me off...

Pro illegal immigration? It's a nonpartisan research group. God, stop being so willfully ignorant.

The important part (if you had bothered to read the rest of it) is that while immigration can affect localities negatively, Los Angeles in particular, a lot of that has to do with the way the tax code is structured. IE: The federal government is making out like a bandit while the cities get screwed. So... when you start complaining about how bad illegal immigrants are for a city, you should check out that they are great for other places. That's why it's called 'the big picture'.

You are a deliberately ignorant xenophobe as evidenced here and in the Muslim thread. All you're doing is digging yourself deeper when you take pride in the fact that you don't read things.

Seems like members of the families can be US citizens and thus should be allowed those benefits. This statistic may be inflated since it's counting them.
 
Just to lend a little perspective to the debate, LA county generates approximately $410 billion towards the GDP of the US (based on average GDP per California resident, the real value is probably higher). So the cost of illegal immigration in LA county, based on the "alarming" figures presented in the first post, is less than 1/4 of 1 percent. Not exactly earth shattering stuff here.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think the problem should be ignored...but Specop 007 specifically started this thread to demonstrate "why many of us are pissed off about illegal immigration". The problem I have with the view presented by the anti-illegal immigration people isn't content, but volume. It's clearly a problem that needs addressing, but you people treat it like a full-on, red alert, asteroid heading towards Earth level emergency when it clearly isn't. And if it seems like your motives are being questioned, this is why.

Edit: If you're an LA county resident, and the OP is accurate, illegal immigration costs you an average of about $100. If that was me, I'd want it back...but going completely apeshit about it seems WAAAY out of proportion to the problem. The war in Iraq costs your average LA county resident about 17.8 times as much, yet the anti-illegal immigration people seem to be screaming WAY louder than the anti-war folks.
