3440x1440 opinions: considering a LG 34UM95-P

I was wondering if anyone had any experience working with a 3440x1440 panel, since I was looking at the LG and it's on sale. I'm considering this to use with my work laptop, which is a Toshiba Satellite s55-b5258 (pretty sure about the submodel but not 100%, it's running Intel integrated and has one HDMI port, listed as having 4K capability but I don't think it's HDMI 2.0, and I've got a USB 3 to HDMI adaptor but that's limited in pixel pushing capability, and is already looking a little bit laggy with a 1080). Most of my work is done with Eclipse, PDFs and OpenOffice text, and I'd like to maximize the amount of screen real estate I can get from that computer's outputs. I know the price efficiency is a bit better from two 2560x1440s (like I have at home) since I get more width and four screen edges, but I'm a bit constrained in outputs. Eclipse does not scale with DPI settings, but I'm comfortable using it with the level of DPI that monitor would provide.

Would this be the best way to get a lot of high quality monitor space for working? I'm not too interested in 4k and having to mess around customizing eclipse just for pixel density, maximizing possible work space is much more of a priority. Has anybody tried that form factor or that screen in particular, and what do they feel about it?

My main concern is that I'd lose out versus two screens because I wouldn't have four screen edges to put things on. The LG has a "screen splitter" app, would this let me, for example put one window on each side of the screen segments?

Thanks!

Open office? I know pros don't like to mess with their workspace but upgrade to libreoffice already!

OT/ maybe wait for the free sync version for added value.

Another note, I think linustechtips reviewed a few of those panels.

Get the curved one, or at least compare the two.
I literally JUST (12 hours ago) got the 34" AOC (same panel http://aoc-europe.com/en/products/u3477pqu ) and am kind of wishing I had the curved version as the edges are very far apart. I didn't look at both side by side before purchasing, but had looked at them generally in a store a couple of months ago.
Mine is hooked up via DP so I don't know about the output issues you may or may not have.

Curved is definitely worth considering IMO, even though it's somewhat more expensive.

As for screen splitting, yes, you can do whatever. There are other free apps as well which will let you do various configurations e.g. http://jgpaiva.dcmembers.com/gridmove.html (it has more options than the gif shows, and I think you can set up your own configs as well somehow) but I am not using mine for proper work so I'm fine with the default Windows left/right split.
I tried the thing I just linked, but it wasn't very useful for me without setting up my own config for 3 vertical splits, but I don't need it, so I cba.
The free one that came with my AOC was terrible and FORCED you to put a window in one of the segments whenever you grabbed the taskbar, so it was unusable for me.

I have one. I personally think it is amazing. Mine has minimal bleed and otherwise flawless. Watch the linustech review of it. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic...ltra-widescreen-219-monitor-my-new-favourite/

I have not used the screen splitter app but I do use it like it's 2 monitors all the time by having 2 things going on each half of the screen.

I think you are going to be stuck with 50hz via hdmi but that shouldn't be too bad really.

Re: office stuff: if I needed more than basic word processing, I probably would. When it's just stuff for internal use and I'm reading most of the time, it's not a huge deal to me. It's nearly always a thing I'm looking at while coding. It wouldn't change the requirement being able to read word processor documents preferably with a full page on the screen at once.

I really don't care about free sync to be honest. It's going to be used with my work laptop at work, I'm not going to be gaming on it.

It is worth considering. It's going to be like a third more at least though, and I'm not really feeling that. I've gotten a rough feel for the form factor with my 2560x1440s at home, and I think I can manage viewing the angle to the screen edges just fine.

Good to know, watching the linus review. I don't care about 50hz, that's not a big deal at all on a work computer.

I had one for a month and the only reason I sold it was so I could get Freesync. It is a gorgeous monitor and the extra horizontal real estate is awesome. Very minimal backlight bleeding. Some good color profiles out there too. If you don't care about Freesync/G-Sync, I would jump on it.

I had to laugh at Linus talking about how the monitor was good for "tab monsters".

My ~400 tabs would no more fit on that screen as what I have now without plugins.

However the rest of the review is making it sound like the balance is good for me and my limited supply of outputs.

I own two of these ultrawide beasts and they're great, however I'm not sure how it might perform with your particular setup since, without a display port port(?), you're limited to 50Hz which you might not like. Depending on how good of a sale you're seeing, I'd recommend grabbing the 34UM94 (if available in your area) as opposed to the 34UM95 since the UM94 is the commercial version of the display and comes with a 3-year warranty as opposed to the UM95's 1-year warranty.

EDIT: I see where you said 50Hz isn't a big deal.

I actually have this monitor that elfear had, and yes its amazing. I use it mostly for gaming, I really didn't know what to expect with the ultrawide but its great

I would recommend getting the curved one as at least for me this thing is so wide it at times looks like its bending away from you

FWIW I moved to it from dual 27" 1440p monitors

Yeah, I think I'd like it too, and if it weren't ~600 bucks more I'd regret having pulled the trigger on the LG. But it is and I don't think I will. Being able to put a bigger eclipse window than I can get now next to a reference doc on the same screen is going to be nice.

I think most people with a 34" non-curved will wish they had the curved one, but then we all remember the reason we got the non-curved one was because it was a lot cheaper, and it's still awesome, but could be better... if we spent more money.

I did run for a bit with my two monitors parallel to each other for a bit just to make sure I didn't mind it much. That level of width is only a little bit weird even when I tried it on TN panels.

They have promo codes and deals all the time, that same monitor i linked to was $899 a few months ago.

Huh. I had not seen any curved ones that low, I must've missed that sale. I will actually consider returning the one I got and going to that then. That's right about at the maximum amount extra I'd seriously consider going to a curve for.

I have the flat version from LG and can ABSOLUTELY recommend it! Really, you can't go wrong with either the flat or the curved version. You can get a flat one for a decent price at some resellers, or wait for the newer versions that are flat/curved that will arrive with Gsync or Freesync...

Just keep an eye out for backlight glow, as that has been reported as an issue on a lot of the displays (read: buy from somewhere with an acceptable return policy). Thankfully, mine has zero issues with that and has been amazing. :)

Yah dell has promo codes a lot, im not sure the reason for such weird times they do it. Sometimes they last a few days, sometimes months ,somethings you go a year without nothing. lol

You can call them and sometimes they will honor older promo codes if you see them around online, sometimes they will, but other times they wont.

After some research they are having a Presidents Day sale going and and that same monitor is $1199.99 now.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=210-ADTR That is $160 off original so little better.

Im not sure why they still list it on main site for the original $1,359? Maybe they expect you to know to click presidents day banner..heh

The price is showing as updated for me now. If I'm happy with the LG though, that'll be the end of it, although anybody wanting one would probably appreciate extra info.

It showed up. It's absolutely gorgeous with no corner glow or anything, and the colors are as good as I can reasonably expect (they included the factory calibration results which I think is a nice touch). Curved would be nice, but I don't think it's a few hundred bucks nice even on a screen this price. I'm typing this on the edge of the screen right now and sitting on the other side and not having any problems reading. The clarity is fantastic, it feels more readable than my cheaper 1440s at home.

The software for window management is almost incredible and the best thing since sliced bread. What really makes it shine is it lets you pick the predefined regions and maximizes screens within them, and when you resize a window in one of those regions, the regions dynamically resize. Top notch there. Problem is when it automatically maximizes things I don't really want maximized, like a command line window. That's a bit annoying. I'd love to be able to opt that out and put it over dead real estate. If I could have it ignore windows not dragged to the edge or something it'd be perfect. Overall it's absolutely fantastic though and makes setting up things like a vertically split view of one piece of code with something to refer to next to it dead easy, and that's what I wanted out of it.

Plus I can plug my headphones into it which saves a cable to plug in, which is always welcome.

Hey, just checking, but you're using the LG Flat 34um95? Or... another one?

Just curious as I'm getting itchy to pick one up and it sounds like you're having a solid experience.

Flat 34UM95. I can't say I wouldn't go curved if the pricing was closer, but with the way I shift in my chair having what I'm working on to the left and what I'm referring to on the right is no big deal.

It's not that cheap to get into but that price is going both towards the width and what is in my experience a very nice panel.

Do note that the screen split software does want everything to be maximized to fill the screen segments. It's not really that hard to get used to though, and I usually have things maximized to screens so it's not a huge loss, but if you like to manage your windows differently it may be annoying.

Three windows side by side works comfortably, I'm not sure three word processor pages would play nicely side by side by side, but other than that any permutation of web browser, IDE (if you minimize side panels or count a whole window as double wide) and word processor works with three side by side.

can HDMI push 60hz at that resolution? I thought they needed DP 1.2 to hit 60Hz and using HDMI would default to 30Hz, or is that only with the 4k monitors?
